He is already reluctant to tell our future kids that there is a Santa Claus. He was raised to know that his mother worked very hard to provide them the toys they got every year and some years were better than others. I was told that Santa would bring us our toys and, well, we were kind of spoiled. Not at all to say that kids who believe in Santa are all spoiled (my parents sometimes went overboard) or that the Elf on a Shelf is a bad thing, but for our future family we will be skipping this tradition. I'm sure we will let them believe in Santa for a while, but the way kids are now it would be a miracle if they made it through preschool without some kid spilling the beans. We're super lowkey about it, though; I don't like the idea of the elf getting into mischief, so we just move it to a different place each night. We also don't play up the whole "the elf is watching you" thing. In our house, our elf is there to remind us about the spirit of Christmas in general. DD loved it last year, though (at 2.5).
