Because I grew up seeing my grandparents once a year I know that to be close, you really have to put in the work. And if I can I would love to. My parents are very involved and want to be a weekly part of our lives. My mom is not interested in watching LO full time but she has said she would like to watch her 1-2/week when I go back to work. I know we are very very lucky for all of this. But ALSO, I think my parents are a little lucky that we love hanging out with them and them being such a big part of our lives and that we are totally on board with a family centered life. (Obviously if they sucked we'd not feel that way so it is a two-way street). I hope that when my daughter is an adult I have the sort of relationship with her that I have with my mom. I hope that she wants me to live near her, and babysit her kids. I want to enjoy some freedom in my retirement just like I want my parents to. But she also lives with that brother and they give her spending money. I don't know if I would do that! But, if I was retired I would certainly watch my grandkids and not expect to get paid. It is such a huge blessing and gift. I do pay her because she gave up her job to do this and we wanted to. I would totally do that for my kids - paid or not - if I was in a position to do so. I am not the SAHM type but I do think it's different as a grandparent. I will help in whatever ways I can and go to as many sporting events as I can.
