I probably will in the future. My eyes are ok....I have reading glasses but hardly use them. But DH had to have Lasik done, his eyes were pretty bad, also my mom has horrible eyes and has had glasses since she was 2 I think.

@DpeachLu: yup! Hard contacts are significantly easier to put on and take off than soft though. I remember the soft contacts flipping inside out on my finger when I was trying to insert because I didn't open my eyes wide enough or them folding over while inserting or if my eyes were dry.

@Alivoo01: wow, would you put your contacts on all on your own?! I didnt get contacts until 9th grade and I remember being at the Opthamologist office for HOURS trying to get them in, I was ready to give up!

My DD has a coloboma, so she started seeing a pediatric opthamologist at 3 weeks and has been back a few times since (she's 7 months now).

Most definitely because I have horrible vision, technically blind! I got glasses when I was in Kindergarten and put into contacts by 2nd grade, and hard contacts by 3rd grade because my vision would worsen drastically throughout the year. Not every year, during the year!! So I will most definitely take our LOs to have their eyes checked out from a young age and at frequencies as needed (yearly).

I can recall having eye exams in preschool, so around 3 or 4. It was like, which way is the umbrella facing type questions. We both have pretty bad vision so I know Lo will need glasses but hopefully not until they are in grammar school at least. Unless they can inherit my LASIK vision :)

We have had my son checked by a specialist 3 times (once at 3 weeks, once at 2 months, once at 6 months). I had glaucoma when I was born and so did my brother, so he needs to be monitored for this. He is checked for this and they can also do certain measurements to tell if he is nearsighted or has cataracts (I also had as a baby). He's fine so far.

I began wearing glasses at age 4, so I will definitely have LOs eyes checked early. Really early. As early as they will check.

Years later, we found out I have a genetic disease that causes eye problems. Both my retinas have detached twice, so I definitely do not want to mess with LO's eyes. I pray he gets DH's genes on that one.

Both my DDs occasionally see a pediatric ophthalmologist for a chronic external eye condition. when they check their vision, it reminds me of a magic show. They do the exam in such a fun way it's not even obvious to the kids. They dim the lights and different toys and sounds come from different parts of the room, and they observe how the kids see everything... I think everything is remote controlled? My eldest DD also had to "read" a pediatric eye chart at her pediatrician's office at her 4 yr old checkup. They might have done it at 3 yo too, but I can't remember.

@Honeybee: @DpeachLu: LO just had his 6 month check-up at the pedi's office on Monday. They did an eye test where they put little electrodes on the front of his head and one on the back (using vasoline) and covered one of his eyes. They then sat him in front of a computer screen, on my lap, and played different images to see the way his brain reacted. This is what they do for a pediatric eye test.

I took lo to a pediatric ophthalmologist when she was.. 14-15 months or so. It was a painful visit to sit through since they dilated her eyes and she didnt like the doctor shining the light in her eyes, but now I know she's got perfect vision and healthy eyeballs!

@Andrea: OK, that's so cute!

I needed glasses in second grade. DH has perfect vision. But I'll probably ask our ped for her thoughts. Lately I've been stricken with an irrational fear that LO will be blind. No clue where that came from, but it's the worry of the week.

Yes, when we have a LO I plan on getting his/her eyes checked very early and often. I have amblyopia and so does a relative's LO but I adapted so much that I can actually see pretty well without glasses because my brain is shutting off the input from one eye...in other words it's making me go blind even though my eye can see. All of this could have been prevented if my parents had forced me to patch!

Interesting! My Optometrist will see my LO.
I actually just looked it up on the actual American Optometric Association website:

I probably won't do it too soon, but I will be on the look out for any signs of vision problems and will make sure he gets checked before he starts preschool. No one believed that I couldn't see the board for a few months and then I finally got glasses.

There is an eye chart at the pediatrician's office so I guess they check it there. I also heard that they check it around 5, when school starts. I don't think I'm going to get them checked earlier unless she complains. My nephew just got glasses because he complained that "his eyes were running out of energy".

Huh, I asked our optometrist's office when I was pregnant with DD, and they said they don't schedule exams until 5 years old, or until the child starts school. I wonder if a lot of doctors do exams for infants?

I have been wearing glasses since the third grade. I don't even remember not being able to see but my mom says she took me because I told her I could not clearly see what was written on the board at school.
I read this interesting article about a little girl who was thought to be delayed and it turned out she only needed glasses! She is even a member of Mensa now as a toddler!
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/47233631/ns/today-good_news/t/meet-mensas-youngest-us-member-she-joined-age/

& this article states: Even if no signs of an eye problem are evident, the recommended first eye exam should be at 6 months of age and again at age 3, according to the American Optometric Association
http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/news/2012/aug/09/yl_guest_column_081212_184267/

Im planning on having my DD eyes checked soon even if she doesn't show major signs of vision problems. She is only 7 months. It will be interesting to see how they check them at that early of an age.
