We have already grounded our LO from screen time. I'm not sure it's really the same but when her behavior goes haywire it's generally from too much tv. So we take it away for a while (like a month) and focus on other activities.

Heck yes, as a jr. high - high schooler, it was the perfect punishment for me (social butterfly.) I HATED it so much, I hated being "left out" of stuff due to being in trouble. If my girls are the same (which I feel like they will be) it will be something I use for sure.

I remember being the maddest after my first speeding ticket, I had a day of grounding for each mile over...13 (obviously I was going very fast) and that almost 2 weeks was BRUTAL!

It depends, what do you consider grounding? I feel like 'being grounded' means different things to different people.

I don't actually remember my parents grounding me, because I was generally a very good kid. The one time I was grounded I actually grounded myself in anticipation of knowing I was in trouble, lol! That was very effective since I was the one enforcing it (this is how nerdy of a kid I was-- I remember that I was in trouble because I hadn't been doing my math homework and the teacher called my parents. My dad was out of town so I spent the time waiting for him to come back thinking now of my own punishment, and I ended up spending the time I was "grounded" doing a big Latin homework project, lol... This was in 8th grade)

@sandy: Yes!!!!! Explaining it better, I would be grounded for taking back and be grounded for a day and then forget to do dishes and be grounded for a week?! Maybe it wasnt the first time I forgot?! I don't remember, but I know then I never thought it was fair.....probably because I was a kid!!

Absolutely when she's older. It may be a privilege like tv/phone or not being able to go out or both.

Lol! I grounded my five year old. She couldn't go out to a party once. Also I made her stay in her room late one afternoon and I gave her dinner to eat there. I like to practice calm flexible discipline. (Still experimenting with what works!)

I'll do it if my kids are motivated that way. I think it will depend on our relationship at the time and what behavior I'm reacting to or trying to prevent. I'd probably start in high school since I doubt they'll have enough independence to restrict before that.

I was grounded about half the time in high school, almost always for being a bitch to my mom. Typically I was grounded for a week or two at a time. I could go to school, sports, Girl Scouts, and sometimes babysit but not hangout with friends. I don't know that it did anything for me. However, it certainly worked on my friends and boyfriends. They didn't let me do anything wrong because they didn't want me grounded... again.

DH also got grounded or "on restriction" a lot. His terms were pretty severe no TV, computer, or going out for a semester. It was laughable because his parents never followed through for more than 3 days. I won't be using that method.

I was never grounded either so I don't know if I'll go that route. I do think that what entails with getting grounded may sometimes be an appropriate consequence, but I guess I'll see when we get there!

We never really had it called "grounding" but maybe thats what it was. Things like not being allowed to do certain activities for a weekend or having toys/games/technology removed for a period of time.

I never did anything that warranted grounding, I was too afraid of the consquences to actually break any rules! My room was a "fun" place for most of my childhood, it had my dolls, books, stereo, etc, so sending me there wouldn't have been much of a punishment.

I will ground my son if he does something that I feel warrants it at the time.

@Mae: I only got in big trouble once and my 3 friends parents all grounded them - we had a stern talk and then my mom ignored me for 3 days - it was brutal - I wish she would have just grounded me

Not sure what I will do with my kids....

@Mae: I agree with this so much! The punishment/consequence system should not be set up in such a way so it can become a trade-off situation where kids decide it's worth it to make a bad decision.

I don't think so. I was never grounded. I feel like it doesn't really fix the problem, it just creates a barter system for bad behavior. If you're willing to lose x for x amount of time then you can do this thing. When my parents were mad at me it was A TALK and a whole thing and I often wished they'd just ground me so I could pay my penance without having to feel guilty. But I think it also made me act better because I knew it wasn't just a straight "well you're grounded for a week" it was disappointing them and talking about it.

@FaithFertility: I think punishments should be handled in a fair manner and it doesn't seem fair if the kids are being punished for things they had no idea would get them in trouble. But it's also impossible as a parent to list out and enumerate every possible thing that is not allowed. That's why I think it's so super important to have a lot of clear and open communication with kids about good decision making in general

I was never grounded but I was a good kid

I don't know that we'll ground our kids but we will take away privileges and likely require them to do complete tasks as part of a punishment (clean out the garage, yard work, etc). I don't really like the idea of just saying they have to stay home and can't use the phone...I don't think that's enough of consequence bc as far as I'm concerned staying home is pretty nice and relaxing. So I think losing a privilege or losing the opportunity to do something that they were really looking forward to is more of a deterrent to bad decisions. Or at least I hope so

Gahhh I feel like I was grounded all the time! I definitely think I will use it but on conditions that LOs know about I feel like I would get grounded for things I didn't even realize were going to get me grounded

When your kids get older, will you ground them? Why or why not, and what age do you think is appropriate to start grounding? Will you ground them from things like their phone or from doing things with friends, or both?

I was never grounded as a kid, and I'm not sure what approach we will take...I don't think DH was ever grounded as a kid either.
