@blackbird: yes, we decided only when DH is around. Maybe I can borrow a inflatable wading pool for when he's not. Hahha

I also would let them in but only with a strong adult swimmer around to supervise.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: sadly it's only been warm enough to go in the pool twice thus far! I more just....hang out in the pool right now! I'm uncomfortable to even float until I get better at it. Hopefully we'll have some free time soon so he can teach me (again)!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: haha we did just move in this past November! DH swims like a fish. The pool was a added bonus; we weren't looking for a house with a pool.

Yeah DH is a really good swimmer and is going to teach me. I learned when I was 18 but haven't really gone swimming since. So I hope it's like riding a bike?

I talked to DH and he's not comfortable with them being in the pool unless he's around.

Thanks guys & gals!

Take swimming lessons, if you have a child and own a pool its better to be a confidant swimmer. When your niece and nephew are there I'd want someone who was confidant swimming with them.

I would let them swim. My mom only knows how to fkoat, but that never stopped her from taking us to swim. She was always clear she wouldn't be able to save us. We didn't fake drown or do anything to cause her to panic unnecessarily.

I would but I would be very strict about them following all of the rules, zero tolerance basically. Some people have all kids who use their pool pass a "swim test"where they have to jump in, go underwater and then swim to the other side without touching or help. It would help you gauge what their abilities are pretty quickly.

I agree with the suggestion to take lessons though, I took them over the winter and even after two or three I felt so much more confident in the pool and I now enjoy those situations a lot more. It seems like $30-$40 an hour is the going rate for private lessons around here.

I would be afraid of something happen, especially if you have a toddler to tend to and can't keep a constant eye on them. I'm not a good swimmer either so I'd rather have peace of mind.

Yes but be VERY clear that they are not to even go in the pool area unless an adult is watching them and has give them the OK to go swimming.

I would use the opportunity to take swimming lessons, if possible! Then I'd do that string trick you mentioned too... the lessons would just be in case there's an emergency.

Plus you could enjoy the pool more this way!

I wouldn't let them swim unless I knew I could jump into the pool and rescue them if needed.

Even if they are great listeners, you never know what could happen - and in a moments notice!

Our nieces and nephews are coming to stay with us at the end of August. I know they are going to want to swim all the time in our pool! Problem is I can barely swim. There is a deep end dilineation and on the shallow end they should all be able to stand up and be above water. If I tied a string to signify the line where it drops and tell them not to go past that will you let them play in the pool?

They all know how to swim and have been taking lessons for a few years. My niece is 9 and has even won some awards! Don't know how good of a swimmer my 7 & 9 year old nephews are. I will have to ask my brother.
I know they will listen to me.
