@mediagirl: I had a similar experience too, once I decided I wanted it done (age 8ish?) my parents made it a reward for something I had done well. I added another piercing at 11 years old for another reward. I'd do the same thing with any future daughters.

Like many of the other posters I had metal allergies, I found that earrings from Simply Whispers worked for me (hypoallergenic). Now it isn't a problem, but I just wear the same posts.

@Mrs. Pen: @Mrs.B: I think this is the main reason why my DH wants our LO to get pierced early (and also so she won't remember the pain). His family produces notoriously bald babies! He and his sister were bald till they were about 3! My SIL & MIL still talk about how people used to ask them why their little boy was dressed in a dress or pink, etc. and SIL was old enough to understand and cry about it. I think DH doesn't want our LO to have that kind of confusion and trauma, LOL! What a daddy will worry about right? :)

Please don't let me take credit for this baby -- she's not mine but every time we went to update our registry I saw her photo (baby model) and I seriously think she's one reason I changed my mind on baby earrings! :)

We will probably wait. I was 16 when I got my ears pierced. My mom didn't let us. She told me no so I let it go. My sister wouldn't let it go so my mom told her to ask my grandmother thinking that there is no way she would let her since she didn't let my mom do it. Well, my grandmother didn't know why my mom was so upset and stubborn. It was just a hole in our ear. So, we got our ears pierced. I was 16, my sis was 13, and the youngest was 10. So, the youngest one had to wait until she was 10. Now my mom decided to get her ears pierced and she was over 40 and still felt rebellious when she got her ears pierced. Ha ha!!!!!

@yoursilverlining: I think the clothing you're referring to is labeled more as teen clothing :) personally as an adult/woman I would never wear pants with "juicy" and slogans across my butt, crop tops, mini skirts, and really low jeans... those were things I wanted to wear in jr and sr high school. But once I was 18-19 they were distasteful IMO. So in that sense I'm with you on not dressing a baby like a teenager!!

@mediagirl: awww what a sweet memory!!

I read through all the comments - very interesting to hear all the different perspectives!

I am in the camp of waiting until she is old enough to care for her ears herself. My grandma took me when I was 7 for my birthday and it was a fond memory for me also.

HOWEVER knowing that my future DD will probably be bald like my son might change my mind!! My mom pierced my sister's ears when she was a few months old because she was always mistaken for a boy (she was bald). My son is bald and while it works for a boy to be bald, not so well with a girl... so I'm open to change :)

Not until at least age 10, and she would have to ask, I wouldn't offer it up. I had them pierced at about 7, and I was not responsible enough to take care of them. Had them re-pierced about 10ish and that seemed to be a good age. Like @runnerd I had insanely sensitive ears (still do a little bit) so it was hard for me to take care of them as a young child.

I'd wait until she is older and asks because I would worry when she is little about her tugging at the earrings, or scratching herself, and earring infections. I was 8 when I got mine pierced and suffered off and on infections for years bc of sensitivity to metals - absolutely couldn't wear studs. As an adult I get zero infections, so I think it must have just been that skin was more sensitive as a child.

Mine were pierced when I was 3 months old. My pediatrician was Jamaican and was curious why my parents HADN'T had mine pierced yet. He asked if there was a reason we hadn't!

I'm really glad mine were pierced at 3 months. I like having no memory of it, and I still have earrings from when I was little that are nice to hold on to. So yeah, I'll be piercing any future DD's ears!

I think this topic has come up before and I'm still on the side of her doing it when she is ready - and as a reward! I got an A on a test when I was 8 or 9 and my Mom and I went out for a girls day. I got my ears pierced and we got lunch, just the two of us. It was a memory I won't ever forget. I want my daughter to have that, too! :)

No, I would wait until she could ask, and then I would probably ask her to think about it for a while. I never pierced my ears, but I do wear clip earrings sometimes, and I would be happy to buy my (hypothetical) daughter some clip-on earrings if she wanted. I know ear piercing is a minor procedure with not very significant health risks, but I feel like in a small way it suggests that it's okay to permanently alter your body for superficial reasons.

When I was younger and dreamed of having babies I always thought I would pierce them as a baby. Now that I'm older and pregnant I have fond memories of my mom taking me when I was 7 to go and get them done. It was SO exciting and I want my possibly daughter to get to experience that.

I'm kind of going against the norm and not piercing her ears as a baby. My mom keeps asking when I will pierce them and then I remind her that my sister and I had our ears pierced when we were old enough to ask, but still young enough that she took care of them for us--I think we were 3 & 4 yrs. old.

I don't think pierced ears relates to inappropriate clothing, dressing sexy, or little girls dressing as women. I see baby girls in many different cultures with earrings who look like baby girls! I don't think, "Hey, why is that baby girl dressed like a woman with those earrings on?"

I'm thinking I'll wait until she's old enough to ask for them and care for them. That's what my parents did for me. However, pretty much everyone I know IRL that has a girl got them pierced when they were babies. Guess when we have a girl on the way, hubby and I will reconvene on the topic.
