Yes it will be awkward but why would I not discuss sex with my kids?? It's part of my role as a parent to prepare them for life and one of those things includes sex, why you need to be careful and why it's important to take it seriously. I want LO to be a responsible, caring adult and that includes relations with the opposite sex. I am gobsmacked that parents would think otherwise than to have the talk. Nothing could go wrong with an ignorant, hormonal teenager...

My mom is a nurse, so she actually got out an old anatomy textbook and sat down with my sister and I when we were 4 and 6 and started talking about the differences between a boy and a girl. I never remember having one specific 'talk' because it was always just matter of fact discussions with us both from that age and it just progressed as we got older. Looking back, it was brilliant, because there was never an earth shattering moment where I was told all the nitty gritty details and felt awkward about it. It was just par for the course, I was always incredibly well informed and because she never acted like it was a big deal, we never treated it like it was a big deal. I remember kids coming to school after having the sex talk with their parents and thinking they had a dirty secret to share, but I was never impressed. It was more like "duh, doesn't everyone know that?"

I was raised by a single mother (had me at 26, my sister at 30). The only discussions regarding sex in our household were, "If you ever get pregnant, don't you dare ever come home." and "God, I slept with sooooo many guys back in the day...", past that I was expected to figure it out myself. My poor sister (who is admittedly a bit slow) eventually got it spelled out for her by a friend at FIFTEEN! Needless to say she was mortified. Meanwhile, I was extremely promiscuous from 16 until I met my husband. I had a friend in highschool actually ask me once "Don't you feel like a slut sometimes?", and all I could think was that, 'Yeah well, my mom did the same thing, why would she tell me all about the guys she slept with if it wasn't okay?'. Eventually I came to the realization it was not okay, and I've always been kind of disgusted by my mom's lack of parenting in that area.

We plan to have an open dialogue about sex from a pretty early age. Obviously when they're young the conversation would be centered more on anatomical differences and functionality, etc.

But I think it's important to leave those lines of communication open sooner rather than later so that rather than have one long awkward conversation that comes out of left-field, its a series that build on each other throughout their entire life. I also feel like if you as a parent are more comfortable with a series of dialogues over time, your child will be more likely to come to you about it if need be.

Absolutely. I think parents who don't take the time to have those conversations (however awkward they may be) do a real disservice to their kids.

yes, my mom got pregnant with me at 17 so she was always very upfront with me. she would rather know I was doing it but safely, on the pill and with condoms, than trying to do it behind her back and end up with an STI or an unplanned pregnancy.

sure enough, when I was almost 17 I wanted to, and asked her to take me to the dr. she did - and no unplanned babes or STIs 7 years later :)

I want my kids to know all of their options, and know that they have my support no matter what happens.

I will. My paretns did not really talk to me about it. But it is def scary how young kids are developing and how young you hear of children engaging in sexual activity. Yikes it is scary!

Yes, because I don't want there to be an instance where my son feels as though he can't come to us if he needs more information. I saw an excellent program yesterday about how sex works, it's a great way to begin the discussion, so I have to figure out how to record it from our DVR to a CD.

Yeah, I don't want her to be surprised about stuff, so hopefully we'll find age appropriate ways to talk. I don't want it to be some big mystery that she thinks I'm embarrassed to discuss with her. But at the same time I want to encourage waiting also.

Yes, for sure! We started sex ed in late elementary school (age appropriate stuff), and I remember my mom having "the talk" with me around maybe 10? I want it to be an open subject and not something they are embarrassed about or feel shamed about. Want to make sure I get the word out to always protect themselves and their partner.

I will. I think it's important. My mom told us the basics of how things work when my sister and I were 8 & 7 because she was pregnant and we wanted to know how the babies got in her belly. The next talk was when we were teenagers, she talked more in-depth about safe sex, condoms, and birth control. She was also very strict and a teen mom, so I waited on sex because she scared me out of wanting to do it.

Oh yes, I definitely will. No one ever talked to me about sex and a combination of that and some various factors of my general upbringing on my moms part lead me to be a very curious person and I ended up getting pregnant very young... I know theres no blaming others but I feel like if she would have educated me about sex and all the other good stuff as much as I was exposed to it through the media I might have made different decisions.

@mrbee: Hey. My parents used the same technique on us! I didn't date until I was 19! Seriously though. Kids these days are so lame. They get money from their parents to go on dates. Heck no. No dating until you make money!

Of course my parents never ever talked to me about sex! These days kids hit puberty so much earlier, I'm not sure what age I should start talking to them.... maybe 11 before they start middle school? Ack that's scary!
