we live in the walk zone of the elementary school. My kids will walk alone to school, or perhaps with friends, as soon as they are old enough to. The world has never been a safer place, and I want them to grow up feeling that.

No buses here. Right now we live a 10 minute walk away from our assigned elementary school and if we still live here and send him to that school I think we will walk him to school for the first few years, then let him walk. And he will have to go to aftercare until he's old enough to stay home alone.

My husband feels differently about this, but I don't plan to wait with my kids. I was always dropped off at elementary school. In junior high, starting in 7th grade, I took public transportation to school and waited on my own.

The bus stop is right across the street from my house. My next door neighbor always waits at the stop for his 12ish year old kid and walks him across the street home... i think it's weird, he could see him from his window... But maybe he's home anyway and just wants to see his kid, idk...

@sunshineandsushi: I bet that is a huge contributing factor. I did a quick Google search and found this article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/five-myths-about-missing-children/2013/05/10/efee398c-b8b4-11e2-aa9e-a02b765ff0ea_story.html

So it seems like the rate has changed... but it's declining, which is good news!

@HabesBabe: If that's true, that statistics have NOT changed, I wonder if instead it's people's perceptions with the rise of the 24/7 news cycle, social media and all the other ways communication has permeated daily life. We're just more aware now of all the stories when it does occur.

Our elementary school is in walking distance (so there is no bus). We will walk LO to school.

The bus stop for middle school and junior high is across the street from our house. I might go to the bus stop to chat with other parents, but likely I will send LO alone and watch from the house.

Don't statistics about kidnappings and attempted abductions show that times HAVEN'T changed? That's what I've been reading for... well, basically for as long as I've been interested in children's safety.

Our kids will walk to school if we are unable to drive them. Currently, I work from home, so I have the flexibility to drop them off, but if that changed, they would walk in a group of friends (like I did) starting at 2nd grade-ish.

We live on a bit of a busy street, so I think the bus will pick up at the end of the driveway, but I may drive her to school in the beginning. I walked to school with my older sister from K-3rd grade. Then in 4th, I took the bus. My parents never waited for me - I walked to the bus stop myself.

I walked myself to school and back. But times have changed and I'll be with my kids when they go to and from school. Actually times started to change when I was in school. A van once followed me as I was walking home and I ran home and called the police.

Yeah, we've had bears at our bus stop before. So my parents always waited with us in the morning. In the afternoon we let ourselves in and called my mom to let her know we were home safe. She worked across the street, so she could hear the bus.

It depends on the age, but I'll wait with them at least nearby until they are older. We may also just drop off at school if we can. Districts are weird around here, we may go outside our district for a better quality school.

No, because we live too close for a bus stop do they will walk.

The story about the van though reminded me of news stories I've seen around here. In one a grandparent was watching her kids wait to get on the bus. One of her neighbors drove past and started yelling at the kids to get in the car. The woman went outside yelling at her to stop and then realized why the neighbor had done it - their was a mountain lion approaching the kids at the bus stop!

And then ANOTHER time there was four kids waiting at the bus stop when a mountain lion appeared right as the bus pulled up. The bus driver opened the door and yelled at the kids to get on. She said they all four piled on at the same time.

So maybe around here you should wait!

Where I live, an adult must be there to put a kid on/get a kid off the bus, so we will probably walk to/from the bus stop. If we move to my hometown, the bus stop will be at the end of our driveway, so I'll just watch from the front door.

In our area the buses pick you up at your house (because they only do bus services for those kids who live out in the country) so this was never an issue. We just walked up our driveway when we knew it was time for the bus to be coming.

depends on the stop & the ages. there have been a few times where my nanny LO's bus didn't show up or came 45mins late, i'd want them to be old enough to handle the situation and i'd be more comfortable if there were a bunch of kids at the stop. eventually they need to become independent, at some point they really should be walking by themselves or with friends.

in 7th and 8th grade my dad would walk my to the bus because he worked evenings and didn't get home until after i went to bed, so it was the only time he'd see me during the wk. it wasn't a safety thing, it was just his way of spending time with me & he wouldn't stay at the bus stop with me, he'd continue on for a morning walk.

The bus stop for our zoned high school is at 6:30 am on the corner of two rather busy streets ( I know because we drive by all the cars parked on the sides of the road on our way to work in the morning).

I'll be waiting with my son, if I can. There are too many stories about people driving around in vans like @dc yoga bee mentioned. The burbs aren't as safe as they used to be!

I walked myself.

In our school district for K-1st grade the driver wont let the kids off the bus unless an adult is waiting for them.

When I am running late and leaving at bus time I see ALL the moms waiting with their kids

I WOTH so my kids will be in before care or will go alone ot the bus stop

Will you wait at the school bus stop with your kids? When I was growing up (in the suburbs, in a subdivision) I think from the time I started taking the school bus in 1st grade, I always walked myself down the street to the bus stop and waited with the other kids, no other parents present.

But nowadays when I drive by a bus stop, every single kid's parents seem to be there. My parents NEVER would've bothered to wait with me, lol. They were too busy trying to get to work. And no way they would have ever been home earlier enough to wait for me in the afternoon either. Once I was old enough to be home alone after school, I just walked home and let myself in.

So will you wait at the bus stop, or will you send your kids off by themselves?
