I also get a flu shot for herd immunity to protect little babies who are too young to get the shot and kids who can't get it for medical reasons. I've only ever gotten it once in my life because I happened to be at a clinic for a different reason on a day they were giving free flu shots. I've also only gotten the flu once that I can remember, but it was during a really stressful time when I wasn't really healthy at all. I ended up getting what I thought was a small head cold the day before I was scheduled to receive my first flu shot, at 17 weeks. My OB requested that I come back in a few days, as it wasn't recommended that I get the injection, while ill. My small head cold ended up snowballing out of control, and became a full fledged flu. It was *horrific* - I couldn't take any medication, and was just throwing up everything I ate or drank. The congestion was absolutely miserable, and I was so feverish. I ended up extremely dehydrated and had to go to the hospital for four bags of IV fluids. I just ask for the preservative free one, and it's free at Walgreens with my insurance. The one I will refuse is the Dtap they want pregnant women to get now. The insert flat out says it is class C and hasn't been tested on pregnant women. FYI, there is a flu vaccine this year that can be given to people with egg allergies.
