I am not a gun person at all but the hubs is and all of his family, we live in the mountains so hunting and sport shooting is all around. We do have guns in the house (he had them way before we met) but they will definitely be relocated and secured even more once the baby is here. The hubs family is very serious about gun education, so the playing around with guns is not a concern to me.

@daniellemybelle: I don't think you are going to find a reputable source that "boils it down". That's the problem with academic public health. It doesn't sound sexy. On the other hand, there are plenty of NRA press releases ready for general public digestion, but when you look at the source material you find either 1) a flawed study or 2) a misinterpretation of the study. The first article touches on one of those instances.

I'll try and find something light, but I don't think I'm going to be successful :(

Nope, not for us. Being Canadian, I couldn't get one unless I plan on getting a hunting license as well, but its not for me.
Living in Muskoka, I'm pretty amazed at how many guns people have though. Even their ATVs have gun racks.

@mrbee: Yes. It's not as if it's a daily activity, but I have been around for it multiple times since they got the guns less than a year ago, and we don't visit that often. Most recently, my uncle who is ex-military and big into guns was over, and my stepdad, uncle and two brothers went outside to shoot cans with my stepdad's rifle. If it sounds kind of redneck, that's because it is. :)

@Mrs. Jacks: Thank you so much! Unfortunately I think these references might be too academic for my mom. Not saying that as an insult to her by any means - she's very smart - I was just hoping for something a little more boiled down, but still from a reputable source... though to be honest, I'm not sure I can convince her with anything.

I really have to not concern myself too much with their decision to have guns and shoot them for recreational purposes (they don't hunt and realistically don't need home protection). I worry about their safety but it is their household and their choice. When we have kids though, it will not fly whatsoever. Like I said, in the safe at all times when the kids are there, or we will leave.

@daniellemybelle: I've found a book link with a very rigorous analysis that says there is no net deterrent effect of owning a gun on intruders and may be associated with a higher burglery rate (pg 98):
http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=Q05iNEB7egQC&oi=fnd&pg=PA74&dq=likelihood+of+gun+being+used+on+homes+occupant+rather+than+intruder&ots=Mj4Y84sbJh&sig=34kgPbNCyhI3KoYAbl8BF1YUSuI#v=onepage&q&f=false

Here is the seminal paper (done by one of my professors) on increased risk of gun violence that occurs in gun owners. (A relative risk of 2 means a 100% in risk).
http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.87.6.974

We never will. We both really dislike guns. However, my parents have guns and we are going to have to deal with this eventually. They never had them when I was growing up but they got them recently, and it really bothers us. DH & I plan to buy my folks a gun safe of their choosing, and will only have our kids at their house if the guns are in the safe. If they insist on having target practice in the backyard while we're over with the kids, we'll go home.

We have a gun, but we keep the magazine out of it. When we have kids, we'll keep the gunlock in and probably store it in our safe.

I think its important to familiarize your children with guns if you're going to keep them in your home. When my siblings and I were young, my dad took us in the backyard and let us shoot targets with a low caliber rifle and took us to a gun safety class.

In Texas, lots of folks have guns, but I know that isn't the case everywhere, so opinions are different.

Not a chance in the world will we ever have a gun in our house - DH is on the same page, perhaps even slightly more anti-guns than I am. Fortunately, guns are outlawed here in Australia (except for farmers to keep the roos off their property) so it's not really an issue. Gun crimes make headlines on the national news here, that's how infrequently gun crime occurs and that's how I prefer it.

I grew up in a house with guns as my dad's profession required it, but I always hated it. I don't have a fear of guns, I just think there is absolutely no point to them and the less we have in the world, the better.

DH grew up with them in a safe in his dad's large garage outside, but I don't feel comfortable around them. We also live in a small place and would feel safer with them NOT in the house. we may revisit when we buy a house and would have a dedicated space for them. but that's YEARS away.

Not in a million years. It's not that common around here, at least not in my circle. I've never shot a gun, never even held one, and neither has DH. I agree with @Mrs. Jacks: I feel that the risks far outweigh the benefits.

We have hunting riffles in our house, I grew up with a house full of guns and I knew growing up never to touch one without my dad being there and they were never loaded/always locked up anyways.

My husbands are locked up and in a safe which will be the only way we continue to have them in our house with children. Our children will take gun safety, whether they want hunt or not, we did and I am thankful for it.

We have guns in our home and while they're never stored loaded, anytime my husband is gone overnight for work, you can bet that there's a handgun next to my bed with a bullet in the chamber.

It's a minimum of 5 minutes from a police officer to my home - where I grew up, it was a minimum of 30 minutes. I don't take safety lightly.

@Mrs. Jacks: That's interesting, because where I live, most households keep a gun as military service is required for men. They're always kept locked and ammunition is separate. I think in this case, it's totally different because there is such intense training involved.

We don't have a weapon in the house, my husband is finished with his mandatory service, so he turned in his rifle years ago.

No, not necessary- we have an attack cat! Just kidding, but neither of us are comfortable with more than a bb or pellet gun in our house.

We had guns in our house growing up- I cringe when I think of how they weren't locked up or anything. My dad taught us how to handle a gun and how to shoot, but I didn't enjoy working with the more hardcore guns. I do want to teach how to handle and shoot bb and pellet guns when kids are much older.

We don't have one because I'm too paranoid to have one. But almost all of my friends do because they grew up with them (hunting). It's a very common thing around here. I think it just depends on how you're raised.

I don't want one in the house and the hubs has never mentioned wanting one. I don't feel comfortable around guns even though I had a friend take me to the gun range on several occasions. I just don't think it's a good idea for us to have one but I believe that people should have the right to make that decision for themselves.
