@Jenna: I was curious after reading your post, so I did a search and according to wikipedia:

Based on the U.S. Department of State regulation on dual citizenship (7 FAM 1162), the Supreme Court of the United States has stated that dual citizenship is a "status long recognized in the law" and that "a person may have and exercise rights of nationality in two countries and be subject to the responsibilities of both. The mere fact he asserts the rights of one citizenship does not without more mean that he renounces the other," (Kawakita v. U.S., 343 U.S. 717) (1952). In Schneider v. Rusk 377 U.S. 163 (1964), the US Supreme Court ruled that a naturalized U.S. citizen has the right to return to his native country and to resume his former citizenship, and also to remain a U.S. citizen even if he never returns to the United States.

We actually have to sit down and figure out which country's citizenship we want our child(ren) to have. Between DH and I, we have the choice of three - US, UK, and Australia. All good options for different reasons.

I'm American - so there's the US citizenship. DH was born and raised in England until age 4 (so there's the British citizenship) and then moved to Australia where he's lived for the past 25 years, and where we're currently living now (hence the Aussie citizenship).

We know for sure we'll have one of the Commonwealth countries (UK or Aus) because there is a world of opportunities available for citizens of Commonwealth countries, and we'll probably do the US as well because US citizenship is a pain in the neck to get if not from birth. Not sure we'll go through the whole process to have a third passport for our child though.

From what I've heard, the US doesn't officially recognize dual citizenship, but you can technically have citizenship in another country if that country does.

For example, if you had dual Canadian/US citizenship and you were in Canada, you would be considered both a US and Canadian citizen. However, when you're in the US, you're only a US citizen. I'm not really sure what the tax implications of that are, though.

I was born in Canada to American parents, and I have dual citizenship. I don't think the US allows it anymore, but I was 'grandfathered' or whatever--one of the last years to allow it, or something (I really am not sure--I just know I have it and that when I was a teen, there was a debate as to whether I would). I don't believe our children would have the dual status unless we moved to Canada before they're born..and even then--like I said--I'm not sure how the law has changed these days.

@MH.Albania: just Switzerland.

@Bluestriped Bee: you don't automatically become Swiss if you are born in Switzerland. You need a Swiss parent, or you can be naturalized, which takes something like 12 years.

Does having a Swiss citizenship give him the same rights (medical insurance and university tuition) in the entire EU, or only in Switzerland?

For us, it made sense to get dual citizenship to have both an American and a Swiss passport. This way, when we go to the US, DS can enter on his American passport and vice versa. We also have his Swiss passport for travelling in the EU, makes it much easier than the American passport.
Another positive is that he is entitled to have healthcare coverage in Switzerland, so even if at some point he has a terrible disease and needs treatment, an insurance company can not deny him.
As a Swiss citizen, he will also have the right to attend university free of charge, should he decide to attend here.
The big downside is the taxation on worldwide income that Americans are subject to. Once you have filed the first time, it's not a huge deal, you automatically get an extension, but you can't do it on line yet, so that's a pain and requires coordination if you owe money.

I thought you couldn't have dual citizenship when you were in the states, but the rest of the world allows it.

Clearly I was wrong!
'There has been no prohibition against dual citizenship, but some provisions of the INA and earlier U.S. nationality laws were designed to reduce situations in which dual citizenship exists.'

Still not sure about this one. Our kids will probably all be born abroad (with the exception of the first, I'm thinking), but we aren't sure if it will really be to their advantage to have dual-citizenship. On the one hand, being EU citizens with an additional passport would be incredibly useful for things like travel in countries not so friendly to Americans (DH and I always wish for EU passports when we're in places like Serbia), and also for things like free health care in the EU. However, if they have to deal with extra taxes and all that yuck, is it still worth it?

Yup, my son has it. When a baby is born abroad to an AMCIT, the baby qualifies as an AMCIT with birth abroad. He's also a Swiss citizens as it is my husband's nationality.

I am not sure if it's a good idea though, depending upon where he lives in the future. As an AMCIT, you are taxed on worldwide income and have to file a return in the US on income earned abroad. It is a pain to have to do that, because it means you have to file local taxes where you work and US taxes.

I will have dual citizenship next year, but I don't think our babies will qualify. I think there's a way for me to request the Korean citizenship because of my status, but we probably won't bother with it.

I'm not sure exactly how it works as I haven't done much research yet, but I think our children will have dual Canadian/US Citizenship since Hubs is a Canadian citizen. It will be interesting to see if they take advantage of their Canadian citizenship when they get older.

Will your children have dual citizenship? Is it as easy as sending in an application for proof of citizenship?
