Stereo only. They won't have cell phones until they are old enough to go places on their own (maybe 10?), and those'll be prepaid with maybe 30 minutes on them. I imagine we'll have one desktop computer for kids to use in a public area in the house.

I remember being jealous of those with a landline phone in their room.

This is a good question though. It's something that Mr. Bear and I will have to discuss when the time comes.

I never had a tv in my room growing up. In fact, my brothers (who are younger) had a tv and gaming console in theirs before I did. I preferred reading books.

As for Mr. Bear, he grew up with electronics in his room. So this should be interesting.

I think we're just going to allow for a radio/iPod dock or whatever, at least until he/she is in high school-- THEN maybe a laptop for school work (although some jr highs are expecting laptops now?).

I never could do homework anywhere but in my own room (I couldn't focus), so I wouldn't want to limit him/her to only using the computer in the office/den.

But no to TVs, gaming consoles, any of that. Probably no cell phones until they're in high school, too (and I would get them some super cheesy one that can only call, no texting/web/etc.).

I always did growing up. Phone, TV, and Nintendo. I was still a good kid and got straight As so I guess my parents didn't think anything of it. I think it will be a judgment call at that time for my own kids. If they are not mature enough, then no. But if I think they can handle it, then yes.

I don't really know yet. We don't have a TV in our bedroom, but I would like to create a master suite at some point where we go upstairs when the kids are in bed and either read or watch a few programs in our master living area.

As far as kids rooms go, no computer or phones, not sure about the TV. We'll see if they can handle the responsibility. I had one in my room, but my parents solved the issue of me being alone in there and watching TV by giving me an old TV without cable or a remote control. It had a dial and rabbit ears so the reception was horrible!

Nope. Glad to see we aren't alone in that. We plan on one tv, in the living room, and that's it. We have a wii, and by the time we have kids and they're old enough for video games, we may have some system, but it will be heavily monitored and limited. Also, they won't get cell phones very young. We will until it becomes a necessity. Laptops will be used around the family, but monitored.

I am going to be strict about this - especially computer/cell phones/whatever devices are available by the time they are using them. I'm with ChopSuey - cell phones and laptops will charge at night in mom and dad's room! And no TVs in their rooms either. Both DH and I had our own bad experiences in childhood b/c of this stuff so we feel strongly.

Right now, the only electronic that we have in our room is our cell phones. We have a rule that no TV's are allowed in our bedroom. That room is for sleeping and lovin', not watching TV. :)

I didn't, beyond a CD player, and I'd like to have the same rule. If we have a house by the time our kids are old enough to want their own electronics, then I'll insist they be in the family/rec room where they have to share and where I can monitor their use and exposure.

We have talked about it, even thought we don't have any kids yet, and we are thinking no. No TV/phone/computer in the room. All the portable electronics we will have a place to store outside their rooms (like in our computer room) so we control the access to it. Most of the toys and such will also probably be kept in a playroom, that way you can actually use their room for punitive groundings/time outs. Also, I think that electronics in the room can be sleep distruptive quite easily, we don't even keep anything other than our alarm clocks in our bedroom either, so we are modelling that type of behaviour

I have 9 year old and she can only have her DS, but she can only play it when we say so. The last 2 years for Christmas my Dad has been telling her he was getting her a TV for her room and I have had to say no. I have told her with the 2 tvs we have in family rooms, she will never get to have her own TV in her room. The same goes for a computer...I am a mean mom:)

I'm okay with our kids having a radio in their rooms and perhaps some handheld gaming devices but they will have to be turned off when we say. We won't allow anything that can access the internet to be permanent in their rooms but they can occasionally take the computer in there (since I can check what they access). Also, I don't mind if they occasionally go into their rooms to talk on the phone but the phones won't be stored there. I think we have to give them a little bit of rope because they need to learn how to make responsible decisions when we aren't standing over them watching every move that way when they are outside the home they will know how to make responsible choices.

Nope. They can have a radio and that will be it. Neither DH nor I ever had any electronics in our room (other than a stereo) and we plan on keeping it that way with our children. Any computer or television time will be in the family room and we do not plan on having any video game systems so that shouldn't be an issue.

The first time I ever had a computer or television in my room was when I went away to college and lived in the dorms. So shall it be for our children....and yes, we'll be those old fashioned parents who are so lame (or whatever word they're using in 18 years time!)

ETA: We don't have a tv, or any electronics actually, in our bedroom so we certainly won't be putting one in our kids' rooms!

Oh right! I had a (I'm so old) boom box in my room because I loved music. I had a huge stash of tapes to listen to.

Computers in the bedroom freak me out because I watched too many episodes of L&O SVU, Criminal Minds, etc. We'll have a family computer in our loft or family room but for sure not in the bedrooms.

Later on (perhaps teens) she might have a tv but not yet. I will probably give her a radio or something becuase she loves music but not until she is old enough to not play with it. And we have already decided she won't have a cell phone until we decide she needs one. And when she is in highschool we will probably get her a lap top. Same goes for future children.

Nope. Luckily both my husband and I are on the same page on this one. We don't think it's necessary at all, so we won't do it. We don't even like having a tv in our room, so no way would our kids have one!

I'd like to think not. They have nintendo DS's that they are allowed in their room, but they aren't allowed to play them once it's bed time and they get put away.

They won't have TV's or Phones. The boys aren't mine so I can only control what happens at our house, and even then that is limited as well.

Once it's our own baby though, that will be a no. I think it'll be a bit of a fight between me & DH when it comes time, because he was allowed all that stuff and I wasn't. I liked not having it, he liked having it. There will have to be some sort of compromise there... ugh! Thankfully that's a discussion that's quite a ways away!
