If school doesn't teach it, I will- I think it's important for my kids to be able to read original founding documents (and other historical documents). Plus, who doesn't like to learn how to fancy sign their name?? If there are other benefits, awesome!

If the school doesn't teach it, I will. It's how I usually write, so if anything, I'll teach it so my kids can read my writing!

If they don't learn it in school, I'll teach them myself. I think it's important and also remember thinking it was cool to learn when I was a kid.

I would like him to learn it.

I recieved a thank you card in the mail yesterday from a high schooler, and while I appreciate the sentiment, the handwriting was kind of surprising. It looked very juvenille.

They will learn it at school.

I actually had to hand write a fairly formal letter this week and my penmanship (and that's just printing!) is so unbelievably horrific. It's kind of embarrassing!

Yes, we'll cover it. Probably more as an art form than as the preferred way to write, though.

yes they teach it in 3rd grade

DS just finished 1st grade and is really into cursive - he can write his name and loves to have me write in cursive and then he reads it

Yes, if they don't teach it in school, I plan to teach them at all. I think it's really important that they learn it, especially as I work for a historical society and if you can't read cursive, you can't read the majority of our historical documents.

I think actually writing is important for those reasons, but my personal opinion is that learning cursive is like any other art...piano, painting, violin, and the tedious practice it requires is best done out of school. It is a big waste of precious in school time. I personally wont teach my kids unless they have some natural desire to learn it.

Just read this article which said that handwriting cursive can have benefits beyond developing fine-motor skills:

<< “This myth that handwriting is just a motor skill is just plain wrong,” Dr. Berninger said. “We use motor parts of our brain, motor planning, motor control, but what’s very critical is a region of our brain where the visual and language come together, the fusiform gyrus, where visual stimuli actually become letters and written words.” You have to see letters in “the mind’s eye” in order to produce them on the page, she said. Brain imaging shows that the activation of this region is different in children who are having trouble with handwriting. >>

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/06/20/why-handwriting-is-still-essential-in-the-keyboard-age/

I am a little skeptical of the importance of cursive, but I don't mind teaching it to my kids! My son is working on his cursive now, and at the very least it should help him be able to read cursive handwriting. And if it really helps with other stuff too (including executive function), all the better!
