I took creative movement from age 4 to age 12, and we did all different kinds of dance, including African and "ballet style". My parents tried several places before they fell upon the right one - one that was nurturing and positive rather than superficial and pressure-filled. obviously you can't eliminate all possibilities of body image issues, but for me, the positives (socially, physically, mentally) far outweighed the negatives. I begged my parents for dance lessons but they were both in the entertainment industry (I spent my childhood backstage at shows and in TV studios) and they felt strongly that they didn't want me exposed to those kinds of pressures (weight/image issues etc). My mum once saw her choreographer friend screaming at his girls that they were too fat..... </p> <p>I really didn't understand her view back then (I thought she was mean) but now I have a daughter of my own I really want to protect her from that world until I feel she is emotionally ready (like: grown up?!). </p> <p>So I voted "I haven't decided". We will play it by ear. Guys who know how to lead and who are comfortable on the dance floor get extra points in the attractiveness category, in my book. This year he didn't want to. Next year J2 will start. Last year, she also did a Broadway dance camp. We just quit when she started kinder. </p> <p>Perhaps she and her sis will start up again this fall. I took ballet for 10 years and love seeing them dance!
