thought of this thread because NYC has made the vaccine available to teachers and our school has been posting the teachers' "got the shot" selfies of themselves getting the vaccine to the school's social media accounts. they haven't communicated that it's a requirement but i find it really reassuring to see so many teachers starting the process.

I'm not going to give this any thought until there's info on whether the vaccine prevents spread... if it's anything like the flu shot, it may not, so it's really a personal decision for the teacher whether they want to take it or not.

That said, it's very much on my mind whether teachers will want to get vaccinated. We're in NYC and school has been complete chaos. Middle and high schools are closed altogether, and elementary is effectively closed too. I don't think it will get back to normal until UFT decides it's safe enough, and if teachers don't feel safe teaching without the vaccine but also refuse the vaccine... poor kids.

Thanks, everyone! And sorry falling off the face of the earth the past week.

In reading responses, and thinking about it more, I think I may ask. The teacher is the director/owner, so I may just ask her if she is planning to get the vaccine. The question is, as many of you pointed out, if she says no, what do I do? I realize the vaccine may not prevent spread anyway, but it's sort of the principle of it. The school is all outdoors so pretty low risk overall but obviously, I want to reduce risk as much as I can, and if there are other schools that are eventually safer due to high vaccination rates, I would switch her.

And @pachamama: so sorry for freaking you out! I do love Waldorf in a lot of ways, but I can't see us there past preschool for this reason.

No, we're at Waldorf of Saratoga!! We love it. I mean the mistake of asking my son if he wanted to stay there or go to regular kindergarten in the fall and he immediately yells 'Waldorf!' If kindergarten looks anything like it does this year, I probably will keep him at waldorf. He'll be very far behind academically but ahead in other ways. I don't know what to do...

I'm on the parent board of our daycare and we talked about this with our director at our last meeting. There's still SO much uncertainty about when the vaccine will be readily available that it's hard to predict, but she thought it could eventually be required for staff by the dept of health, just like flu and tdap vaccines. But our state is struggling with the roll out and teachers aren't anywhere near the top of the list unfortunately! our school (it's part of a pk3-8th grade program too) has really thorough safety measures in place already (testing, ventilating systems, masks, etc) but they don't have access to vaccines or control over when they'll be available

@pachamama: Are you at the Waldorf school in Rockland County? My husband went to the high school there, and my son went to summer camp there last season.

As a teacher, I would not be offended if a parent asked me about my plans regarding the vaccine, but I would not advocate for either my employer or my child's school to require staff to get it. I think that it would be a violation of privacy for a school to comment on whether a specific teacher had been vaccinated (if large enough, I imagine they could release percentages or something). The vaccines are not magic bullets, and it is unknown whether they protect against infection or just symptomatic infection, so regardless of individual teachers' vaccination status, we will not be able to relax precautions until we are closer to herd immunity. My LO is in pre-K, and I have accepted that she will not be attending preschool without masks and social distancing again, as I don't expect those things to be gone by August.

Shit I didn't even think about this but trust this site to give me anxiety about something I hadn't realized (no offense, it's just the nature of this forum!)
My son goes to an actual Waldorf School and a lot of the families at least are very anti-vax. Once New York State enacted legislation to require vaxs, enrollment dropped. His teacher .... Not sure. She probably won't get it. Another thing to stress me out.

Vaccines are still on emergency use authorization. I don't think that anyone will be required to take a vaccine until it has full approval from the health authorities.

I'm planning to wait at this time as I prefer my parents and in-laws and other older adults get it. I am an essential worker. It's also not authorized for children, so I can't visit as the kids will still be able to spread the virus.

Do you have an exit plan if the teacher tell you that they will not get vaccinated? How are you going to handle that?
I am concerned just like you and you can voice your concern.... I would probably just write them an email so that you're not cornering them.

I don't think you can ask your teachers directly, but you can certainly ask the preschool director about it. That's what I would do.

I work in a public school with preschool special needs. We are not required to get the vaccination (or any actually) however students are (WA state requirements unless a religious or medical exemption). My sons daycare does not require staff to be fully vaccinated either but many have assured parents if they are eligible they will be getting one of the vaccines.

I am currently working in person, and 9 weeks pregnant. I am waiting to ask my midwives to see what they recommend regarding the vaccination even if there is no research on pregnant women.

PERSONALLY, because I live in a state that requires vaccinations if a parent asked me I wouldn’t be offended. I know about their kids, they should be able to ask about me too.

I think employers may be legally allowed to require it (with reasonable procedures for exemptions) but I doubt many will. I know my center doesn’t require flu vaccines and I wish they would 🤷🏼‍♀️ I do hope they’ll facilitate and perhaps reward getting vaccinated though.

I don’t think too can ask. I work for the federal government and have already had employees asking if we’ll mandate vaccination before people can come back to work but legally we can’t mandate or even ask about it. You obviously don’t face the legal issues just asking personally but I would find it inappropriate.

I’m hopeful that essential workers will be able to get the vaccine soon, and this seems to include daycare/preschool teachers (along with K-12). My question is whether your preschool will be requiring teachers to get the vaccine and letting parents know once teachers are vaccinated. We are at a very small, Waldorf-inspired forest school and I’m afraid the 2 teachers may not get vaccinated since they are kind of Waldorf-y. (I am super pro-vaccine in general but we chose this school anyway since it’s just preschool and not true Waldorf). Do you think I can ask the teachers if they plan to get the vaccine or is that just inappropriate? I’m so stressed bc I really want them to get it but maybe no school can require it. The hospital I work at isn’t even requiring it so..?

Anyone else thinking/worrying about this?
