My mom has been suggesting William as well due to family members but I'm not sure about it either. Any other suggestions on it?

I love the name, was my grandfather too (went by Bill)- it is still a contender for another son. Only I want to use a derivative of it though- Will or Liam on the birth certificate instead of the formal full name.

This still cracks me up: Raymond was always going to be the first middle name for a boy. Cam was going to be Will Raymond originally- my husband and I were talking it over at dinner one night and he stopped and said, "My dad will call him Billy Ray as a joke." That ended that name combination immediately! I mean absolutely no offense to anyone that chooses that combination... I just didn't want to hear Achy Breaky Heart for the rest of my existence!

My husband's name is William (goes by Billy which totally suits him) and his Dad is also William (goes by Bill). If we have a boy he will most likely be William too...and we will most likely call him Will. None of them are juniors bc they will all have different middle names.

I don't know any Williams either and I love that name. I love those classics! I know 3 Liams but no Williams so he could very well be the only William in his class!

We will be naming any first boy we have William. It is DH's dad's name and he passed away when DH was a boy and it is a way to honor his dad. I love William as it is without any nicknames and do not know anybody who has named their boy William. You could also spice up the middle name so that you won't have a super common name.

I agree with @sulli301. I see/hear of more Liam's these days over William. Although I do like the idea of using Liam as a nickname for William! To me that is unique (so many use a variation or Will or Bill). I think William is a classic name that has significant family ties for you so you can't go wrong :)

I love classic names and it's a great one. And you know, I worked with kids before I became a SAHM and I can't recall having one student named William. So, if it's a special name to your family and you both like it, just go with it.

@MrsBee - I think my aversion is that I grew up in the south in the "country" and Billy tended to be a redneck name. If I didn't have that association, I love it. I'm working on getting over that since I'm in a more metro area now. And our last name starts with B, so it would be cute to have the BB sound (my husband has it and I love it).
I tried to talk hubs into Billie for a girl, but he wasn't a fan :o) I love that though!

I think William is a classic name and will always be popular. Although, I think other more modern names are becoming more popular than the classics. I've seen a ton of Brayden's or Braiden's this year.

I love the name James, which is a classic name. I think it's popular but not as popular as others.

Thanks everyone!
I think I agree that keeping the name William vs. doing a nick name might help with popularity. I seem to hear Will a lot more than William around these parts. It does seem like popularity is a silly thing to worry about if you love a name. I think it's from my childhood with 3 Meghans, 2 Jennifers, 2 Jenny's, 2 Courtney's, etc in my classes growing up!

@SloaneandPuffy - I would die if I heard Willy! Hahaha, that is actually one of my fears as a nickname as my family is "country" so Willy or Billy I could see being brought up by an aunt or cousin!

@MrBee - glad to hear you weren't traumatized by a popular name :o)

William is my son's name. It is a family name for me. We already have Bills and Billys in the fam, so we call him William. (Except for his nanny who calls him Willy!! I pretend not to know that.)

I live outside the US so it's not such a big deal. But anyway, of my friends back in the states I haven't heard of that many Williams, even though I had also seen it up there on the official charts.

I just love the name, what can I say? I think it's timeless and elegant. And for me, very significant in terms of my family as well.

I love the name William personally (I also love Will as a nickname). I probably won't use it as Will is my sister's favorite boy name, but if you like it I wouldn't let popularity persuade you not to use it.

My name was the #1 most popular name when I was growing up! It wasn't so bad... people would just use my last name or initial to clarify.

I've realized over the years that you can't really honor family members and still hit all the other name criteria that we all have. So at the end of the day, it's really a decision over what your name priorities are!

I think William is a name that isn't used all that often, there are more often than not nicknames made for that name. I would bet that if you named your son William and called him William (not Will, Bill, Liam) you wouldn't meet many other boys with that name.

My husband loves William for a boy, it's his dad's name. It's also my grandfather's name (I was very close to him), so it's a great option to honor both sides of the family. We also like family names. Also, husband is pretty cool with all things baby, but he's kind of put his foot down (not in a bad way) that he really likes this name.

My only problem is that it is very popular (I think it's #5) for boys. I just hate the idea of there being 5 William's in class and 6 on the baseball team (I have a friend with an older sister that described this exact problem with her William).

For any of you that have picked the name William for your little boy, what does he go by (William, Will, Wills, Billy, Liam, etc)? Any other suggestions for nicknames?

I'm really trying to talk myself out of being anti-William, so I need your help!!!
