We are not practicing. However the legal guardian we chose- my cousin and her husband are very religious. I expect they will take on an unofficial godparent role too. Their 5 children will function as cousins. I don't think it needs to be the same person and guardianship can change. My SFIL is ill, if he passes while LO is still a minor we will make MIL her guardian, but would not want her responsible for her ailing husband and a youngster. But she's young- in her mid 50s.

So short answer, things can change. Choose the best person for each job IMO.

Legal guardians are my sister and her husband. Godparents are DH's best friend and his wife because they are the same religion as DH and have both taken all the sacraments. (I'm not religious at all, nor is my family.)

Godparents for us are spiritual leaders for lo. Legal guardians are our parents and then my brother (also Ds' godfather) and his fiancé.

For us, since DH isn't religious, he wanted someone who could be a legal guardian too, so we picked his sister and her husband. For me, it's more about the spiritual guidance.

My sister is our childrens' legal guardian, after us, she also happens to be LO1's godmother. The "backup" legal guardian happens to be LO1's godfather. But the fact that they're the god parents played no role in choosing guardianship, we chose based on who would raise our kids in a way we'd want.

Neither sets of or godparents are married to each other. We asked DH's aunt and uncle to be the legal guardians, but we need to revisit that since both of our families have grown since that conversation!

LO2 had two godmothers, one of whom is in college and the other who lives on a boat (uniformed service, not just on a sailboat.) so yeah...they won't get custody!

Godfather and his wife are legal guardians if we die, godmother is another person entirely who would not have legal guardianship.

Ours is a coincidence

My brother and his wife are the Godparents because they are the only ones who share our religion and actively go to church (requirement to be a godparent) - they are also the legal guardians

Because we're not religious (at all; I'm an atheist), we don't have godparents from that standpoint. But because it's easier, that's what we call a legal guardian. Just sounds nice, I guess? Though we're considering changing who we originally picked (she's gone through a divorce since we originally chose), and I think if we do we'll still call her the godmother because she loves it so much. So for us, it's an entirely non-meaningful term at this point.

We haven't assigned a legal guardian, I know we should. Who his godparents are won't be a factor. I'd like him to be raised with my sister's kids because they are his only cousins and I think he'd benefit from being in a family environment rather than with grandparents or his single aunts.

LO's godparents would not be his legal guardian were something to happen--LO would go to my parents in that case, but his godparents are friends (who barely know one another). To me, a godparent is responsible for religious something (for me, being willing to answer questions and discuss things with LO if he expresses interest) and just being a general positive influence in his life.

LO's legal guardian is actually one of her god mothers, but to me they are not the same thing. Hopefully she will agree to be #2's legal guardian too, but she won't be his godmother.

I'm in the midst of pulling some information together to get our will done when this munchkin is here.

Did you have the same people as legal guardians vs G-dparents or were they different individuals?

I'm having a tough time deciding both of these items. DH is positive who he wants as the G-dfather, but I'm torn between my closest friend and my sister, not wanting to hurt my sister, but not sure if I want her to be in one of those positions.
