@threeplusme: It's been a slow process! This is the one room in the house that really feels decorated and like its 'ours'- which is why I want to finish the windows! Rug was a random find at Home Goods- I was looking for blue but loved it. And ottoman was like, overstock or amazon. Fancy. :)

We're in the same boat as you with no window treatments in our new home. Seeing your decor motivates me to get it together. Loving your rug and ottoman/coffee table. We have a similar room and couch but ive yet to add more decor.

@Foodnerd81: I two sets of a really similar pair from IKEA. They are awesome. They wash well and don’t shrink. And yes I’ve had to wash them due to an epic blowout. (Don’t ask) we have them in our bedroom and our guest room. Really identical except for the pattern. They are really nice and the price is 👍

@lady baltimore: I’ve been thinking we would have two long rods over the big window that meet in the middle (it’s 168 inches long total and I don’t think we can get one rod that long anyway), and have the curtains bunched all the way on the ends. You can see that well but I’m the fireplace wall there are two single windows flanking it with hardly any wall between window and fireplace, so I would do just one panel for each of them, pushed to the side away from the fire place.

I’m really liking this white and light beige pair from ikea. It turns out their 98.5 inch length, plus curtain rings, will make it the perfect height- I thought I was going to have to get 108 inch and have them all hemmed, so skipping that step is REALLLY appealing!

What if you ran a continuous rod all around the room and gathered the curtains in the corners when you weren't using them?

If you are not in love with the white, I found some colored light, gauzy curtains at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. We have brown in one room, and a light greeny-blue in another. We also have them double-hung with thicker curtains. Maybe you could do something light and gauzy for all of the windows, with a heavier curtain on each end as a visual anchor.

@Foodnerd81: No, don't repaint! I really like the color of your walls- nice and neutral! I don't think those are quite right, like you said- not The one- I just think it looks better than the blue curtains. So something along those lines, light color and lightweight and I didn't realize they're as light as you can go without being sheer, I couldn't tell from the photo. And like pp I like a combo of bamboo shades and curtains too, just depends on the final look you want.

@Foodnerd81: yes they are inside mounted. We really love them. This is in our sun room so it gets really bright and they add the perfect amount of filter and make the room feel more finished. I like the idea of a PP to get bamboo and then one rod of sheer curtains.

@Foodnerd81: linking to the product we used at our home in FL http://www.ecoshadesfactory.com/roller-shades.html

We needed something to cover a four panel sliding door so that we could watch TV during the day. For peace of mind we still wanted to see out. We had transoms above the windows and did not cover those with shades, but ours had at least a foot of wall between the transom and the rest of the windows.

Aww heck no on real plants with real dirt. Our indoor plants are all faux. Our current house is a cave so even if I could stomach a spill the plants wouldn’t get enough sunlight to survive.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: this room is actually at the back of the house with woods behind us, so privacy isn’t really a concern (though t would be nice when I’m home alone at night and get spooked!). But yeah filtering without darkening would be perfect.

Oh and I definitely want to add a big plant in the corner some day. But not while my kids are so little and we have so many play dates with other Littles who might get into the dirt and whatnot.

I’d go with Eco Shades. They are light filtering and block sun without darkening the room too much. You can get total privacy and still see out.

I’d skip curtains entirely and add more color/ interest to the room with plants, sconces and other things you could put behind and around the perimeter of the room.

@Mrs. Pickle: when open, would you bunch the panels up between each window, or all bunched up in either side? I’ve been debating that as well.

I would do a combo of bamboo shades and curtains. I have windows like that in my living room, and you really need one curtain panel per window. In your case I would hang one long rod above the window and then get six panels.

@Ina85: it’s hard to tell in the photo but those are super thin and light. I think anything lighter would have to be a sheer.

I’m not sure about white curtains against the off white wall- it’s BM Sail cloth- painted right before we bought the place and I really don’t want to repaint!

@Canoli: thanks for this picture- it’s been really hard for me to visualize those shades with the extra window on top. Yours are set inside the window frame right? With the way the screens are in these windows I think we have to install anything out of the frame (the correct term is eluding me right now!). ETA: inside mount or outside mount. That’s the term I was looking for!

The couch is from a local furniture store but it’s klaussner brand. It was relatively inexpensive and I don’t expect it to last for years and years, but with little kids I didn’t want to have to freak out on them being rough on the couch! Plus we got the extra stain warrantee

You could do bamboo or rollers at the top but they might look a little heavy at the top of the windows.
I wouldn’t discount curtains just yet. If you just want to filter the light a little maybe something really light and gauzy? IKEA normally has a couple of options. That way you could just pull them late afternok , still get great light but no glare. I agree tho that the current curtains you put up don’t quite work.
As an aside, that is a lovely room. And can I take a nap on that sofa with a roaring fire going please!?

Looking for ideas or inspiration for window treatments for our family room. We have a bunch of really big windows and high ceilings (only in this room because it was part of an addition- the rest of the house has pretty low ceilings). We thought we wanted curtains, but I ordered some and hung them up temporarily with a rod and command hooks and now I’m thinking maybe no curtains. But we do need something because the light coming through can make really harsh glare at certain times of the day.

What would you do? Maybe bamboo shades? Doesn’t have to be light blocking, just enough to soften the light so it doesn’t blind us. The transverse windows at the top throw me off (that’s what they are called, right?).
