I had a December baby (Chicago) and mid November baby (Houston). I liked the timing. Everyone is nesting in the winter, and it's an easier time of year to stay indoors with family and friends. I like even more having a 6 month old in the summer! By the time summer comes, your baby would be old enough for sunscreen, chlorinated pools, trying seasonal produce at farmer's markets, crawling around outdoors... It's awesome!

I had my second baby a week before Christmas, here in boston. Having a baby in the winter was fine. Having a toddler and a baby in the winter kind of sucks. My toddler got sick so much this winter, and while the baby never got really sick from her, she did get pretty snotty. DH and I both got sick a few times (the whole not sleeping thing didn't exactly help our immune systems). It's been hard to get the toddler outside to get exercise even in this mild winter.

But I sah with them both. I think if my older one was in daycare or school it wouldn't matter nearly as much, though she would still be bringing home the winter colds.

And having her right before Christmas meant I had extra help with my ILs visiting, but also too many people in the house for too long when all I wanted was to be home with my little family and an ice pack on my chest.

Like you said there is no perfect time. And while I don't feel like the timing was ideal for us, I do love this LO so it worked out. 😊

DS1 was born in late November. I actually really liked it because by the time he was ready to be out and about, the weather was nicer and we could get outside. I think I'd choose to avoid a fall birthday over a winter one because just when they're getting to the age you want to take them out, the weather is getting worse.

ETA: The downside was that he got RSV at 3 months, which was a bit scary. But that could happen with any baby, so who knows?

My first was a January baby in Canada, during a really hard winter. It wasn't bad for the first bit - I never really wanted to take a newborn anywhere anyway, and we just needed to remember to preheat the car before we did go anywhere. But by April when it was still freezing with snow on the ground I started to get a little stir-crazy.

DS is an early November baby in Canada and the first winter wasn't bad at all. We stayed in a lot, which I think we would have done regardless of weather, but also made an effort to get out as a family with our dog when it was 'normal' temps (warmer than -15 Celsius) if you have the proper gear it is fine.

I agree the second winter with a non walking toddler was worse....he got so heavy to cart around in all the winter gear! We did IVF so we theoretically could have chosen when to do our cycle and it didn't cross my mind once what time of year he would be born in. I think there's benefits and drawbacks to all the seasons.

@peaches1038: Lol, I was totally exaggerating! But I know what you meant about putting a LO in daycare and then they immediately get like every sickness. It stinks.

@petitenoisette: That actually does sound nice. But yes, the idea of trying to get to the hospital in a blizzard freaks me out! Hope you are right about getting another few years break.

@catlady: I'm sure I would have been singing a different tune if I had a kid already, but it was actually pretty amazing being pregnant last winter. I feel like I skipped the madness. When I talk to people about it it seems like a lot of people basically have PTSD, but I am just like oh I remember it snowed a lot? I got out of all shoveling and thankfully as a teacher had snow days so never really had to drive in it. And baby was not born during any of the blizzards thank goodness! (though one of my coworkers had hers and they had quite the fun drive to the hospital :silly:)

Anyway, I think we're probably safe for another two or three years before we have another terrible winter, I feel like it's pretty cyclical!

@peaches1038: That's a really good point. My LO is an October baby, started daycare in January, and was sick for like the next 15 months straight. Hehe.

@petitenoisette: Another winter like last winter is what I am scared of! If it was like this "winter", it would be fine. :)

I had an early November baby and honestly would've preferred a later winter baby. He started daycare in February and has been sick since. If I had him later, he wouldn't have started daycare during cold/flu season and we might've been able to skip all the illnesses until next year!

Ended up with a late October baby in Canada. It wasn't a big deal except for the limited outside mobility with a stroller, but a carrier can solve that problem as long as it's not slippery. There were some days where it was way too cold to go outside, even bundled up, but not that many.

Had an end of February baby in Boston LAST WINTER. I loved the timing, even a bit earlier in winter would have been better but it was nice that flu season was mostly over by then. I just wanted to hibernate at first and then Spring was here before I knew it (albeit with piles of snow still everywhere). Though for baby 2 I don't know if I'll want to hibernate as much!

My second was born a week before Christmas (we live in cold-ish climate--PA). I was anxious about it, but the day we left the hospital it was like 70 degrees! This winter was so mild that I don't think there was any day I felt like it was too cold to go outside (and we only had one BIG snow...I couldn't drive for a day or two).

I've had three winter babies in Canada. It's worked out well except for the Christmas proximity. By the time the babies are fun and on a normal schedule the weather is beautiful.

The big girls were content to play in the snow in the yard for exercise so staying close to home wasn't difficult.

I had a December baby and I liked it. It was cozy to stay home when it was cold or snowy and then on days where it happened to be particularly warm, we'd bundle him up and get a little fresh air.

I had a December baby (with a 2.5 year old) in Maine. The year we got a blizzard every other week. Honestly, it was a little rough! I didn't have much help and just getting out of the house with so much snow and an infant was hard! I don't abide by the stay home with the baby until vaccinations....it's just not practical with a toddler at home who needs to get out. This time we'll still have a young baby in the winter (October baby)....oh well.

I would not wait just b/c it's winter! I had a Dec baby in NY and am a Nov baby myself. I hate my winter bday too, but it's just one day.. NBD!

I actually really liked the fact that for my first child she is a winter baby. We didn't go out, and didn't want to anyway! I mean yeah, I couldn't just take her out on a stroller walk till like April/May, but I was happy to stay in and be on maternity through the snow especially!

It was easy to go out since she was just in the infant seat the whole time. Not like now when we have to put on jacket, take off jacket, etc.

For my next baby I'd really like a summer bday though so I can still go out and do stuff w/ DD!

I had a December baby in an Alpine country...it snowed while we were in the hospital, but then we had the warmest winter on record after that. I was outside with a spring jacket in January.

I had a late Nov baby (first) and I enjoyed it! It helped that the holidays kept us excited, but could use cold/flu season to stay inside, etc. I didn't leave the house until LO was 7 weeks or so for errands, parties/getogethers so that part sort of sucked, but I don't think I would've done it differently being a ftm.

As a second time mom, I ended up with a July baby which is the opposite weather here (humid & hot), but it didn't stop us from being out and about right from the get go, especially to get big bro some play time outside!

I have months that I don't prefer to have babies, but I'm a firm believer that you can't always pick and choose the "right" month, and I wouldn't hold off on TTC if that was the only factor! Good luck!!!!

Having a Feb baby in New England really wasn't bad at all! When it was dark and cold, we didn't want to go out anyway since we were so tired and still figuring out the routine of a newborn. By mid March when LO was 6 weeks, daylight savings had rolled around and it was lighter and warmer and we would go on walks outside. By summertime, LO was able to enjoy the good weather as he was 4-8 months and was even crawling. It was actually more difficult dealing with winter again around 10-11 months because he couldn't walk yet and we couldn't do much with him day by day outside.

Just wondering what life was like in the newborn days for those with winter babies born in cold climates. Did you enjoy it or hate being stuck inside all the time?

We're supposed to start TTC #2 again soon but I'm really nervous about potentially ending up with a Jan or Feb baby in Boston. DH have always skipped TTC in the spring in the past. I have a Jan bday myself and have always hated it. On the other hand, given my age and history of loss, it feels really dumb to wait longer. Hoping to hear good stories about winter babies. :)
