@jennlin821: I actually just ordered this for my currently 10 month old - http://a.co/hZqW0bV

Thin enough for carseat! My thought is that we'd put on her clothes, put this on, carry to car and strap in, then take care of older DD, then when we get to daycare (or other destination), baby can come out of carseat and into stroller with that thing on and maybe just throw a blanket over and once we get indoors just take that off.

Thanks everyone, this has been great advice.

We live in downtown Portland, so we will be doing a fair bit of outdoor walking (stroller or baby carrier) and are planning on getting a thule chariot for heartier outdoor activities.

I'd look at getting a north face or equivalent jacket, the thermoball style. They are car seat safe (as is the patagonia equivalent). They also make a bunting but its $$. I have it, but mainly because i bought up a size to get me through two winters and we are in the stroller most of the time.
Don't worry about boots, your kid will likely be sitting in snow for 2 minutes
I picked up LOs winter gear in a size up secondhand (she was 1.5 one winter and i got her a 2T from lands end) and it will fit this winter as well. Winter gear is GREAT to purchase secondhand because typically for up to about 2-3 T, and even beyond, it isn't used heavily. Ive purchased patagonia stuff secondhand also (it lasts forever)

For sleep: I invested in a merino wool sleep sack. It was expensive but its 3, almost 4 seasons and keeps her warm in winter and cool in summer. Its amazing. Its by woolino. My kid is older, so she's in a 2-4T, but they make a smaller one that would last you at least 2 years. That and footie pajamas and she's good to go.

I wouldn't worry about boots until next winter (2018). You'd probably be throwing away money.

At that age I just used a fleece bunting with a hat. The bunting had foldovers on the hands and feet to keep them warm in needed. Thin enough for the carseat and warm enough for quick transfers. Worn in the stroller with a warm blanket over top, or a JJ cole bundleme (stroller only, not safe in carseat) We didn't really play in the snow at all for DDs first winter, so I wasn't worried about that

I have two winter babies and DD2 is 10 months this month too. I'm in NY so it can get pretty cold, but I live in the suburbs so we're mostly just hopping in & our of cars.

It's not advisable to use anything that goes in between the baby/carseat, etc. When they were infants, I used this -
http://a.co/bxny1fb

Then in a convertible, I usually just strap them in with a thin fleece (nothing too thick/bulky to make the gap between straps and your child too big). And I'll cover them with a little blanket or something. I'd take off/put on jacket in the car (we had SUV in the past with 1 kid, now mini van with 2).

DD1 never played in the snow much her first two years to warrant a full on snow suit. I think this year (she's turning 3) will be the first year. BUT, then DD2 will most likely be out with us too so I am going to get her a snow suit (she'll be 1).

I had saved these mittens on my to-get list, other bees have recommended them! - http://a.co/8tcNHG7

As for sleeping, mine has always just been in layers and a fleece sleep sack and we've been ok...

I'm in NY but it gets cold here too!

Once you're out of a bucket seat, get a light weight packable jacket for the car seat. Gap has primaloft ones that aren't too expensive.

Is your kid walking yet? Are you in the city or suburbs? That will heavily influence your snow/cold weather purchases. If you are in they city, a down parka would make sense.

We live in the burbs. My current 16 month old loves the outdoors plus he has an older brother so we invest in nice snow gear. I get decent snow boots and a nice pair of insulated snow pants (from the Gap) since I get points.

At that age I wouldn't really worry about boots. I don't think 12-14 month old kids care about playing in the snow. If you do feel like you might need them sometimes you could find a used pair.

My oldest has a September birthday so I bought a snow suit and I'm pretty sure he wore it twice for about 5 minutes each.

For the car seat, invest in a remote car starter to get it warm first! You can bring him to the car in a regular coat and just take it off. I have seen fleece car seat ponchos that go one after being strapped in. I'm thinking about making those this year. Otherwise a coat with 2 layers and just take off the outerpoufy layer for the car seat.

If it's snowy you won't be using the stroller outdoors much. You can get a bunting for it though.

My biggest suggestion is just shop used from a consignment shop or FB yard sale group.

@jennlin821: our climate isn't quite as cold but we do get some snow. Our two learned to walk in October last year and neither was walking well enough to spend much time playing in the snow. We got super cheap snow pants and boots on Amazon but hardly used them. As for car seats they were both in convertibles and we used the Patagonia down sweaters. And did a lot of preheating the car in the early mornings.

Hello Everyone! We just moved back to New England from Texas, so this is our first cold season with DD (who is 10 mo old). I'm not sure how to handle cold weather clothes, specifically for the car seat. She is still in a bucket, but I'm not sure how long she will be in there. She won't outgrow it for another 10 pounds, but she may outgrow it lengthwise in the next month or so!

So my first question is, is it worth it to get a bunting for the car seat, for only 2-3 months? It is already 40 degrees out in the morning, even if it gets up to 70 during the day.

My second question is, what does everyone use for an infant in a convertible car seat?

My third question is, what does everyone recommend for other winter gear?
What is a good thin & warm coat for the carseat?
What about for wearing in a stroller, playing in the snow, etc? DD will be 12 months, in the beginning of December. How do I avoid buying several coats or pants as she grows? She's not walking now, but she will be by the end of the winer....so what do I do about snow boots?

Cold weather climate moms help me out!

Thanks :)

ETA: a few more questions!
Her hands are always cold, mitten suggestions?
What about pajamas? She wears several layers and a fleece sleep sack to bed, but her hands are always freezing, and I worry about her arms not being covered. Do they sell sleep sacks with arms?
She has figured out how to take her socks off, so suggestions for slippers/shoes? She is not walking, just crawling, but I could only find heavy sneakers, or slippers without skids on the bottom.
