DD started walking in November last year. We had a hand me down snow suit that she wore once. The winter was so awful last year that we didn't really go to the outdoor playground too much. We used a Columbia fleece bunting most of the time. It kept her super warm and had fold over feet so she could wear boots if need be or just her regular shoes in the bunting if we were just having her in the stroller.
Like this one...

@Foodnerd81: This will sound weird, but my mom goes crazy buying stuff for him. I would like to pick out his winter jacket because I don't always share her taste. So, I am trying to get something now before she scoops me. My parents watch him twice a week, and I think they are physically incapable of coming over empty handed. It drives me crazy. We live in an apartment, and they bring too much stuff that we don't need.

We never did snow pants, just fleece ones were more than adequate. So, fleece pants or fleece-lined jeans and a warm jacket that can fit in the carseat, plus hat and mittens.

If he's an early walker then he might be attempting to toddle in late winter, but most of the season he will probably still be crawling. So, if it's super cold or snowy I don't think we will be bothering with the playground. And we live in an urban area but often drive on the weekends. Sounds like we can just get him a jacket to wear in the stroller and not worry about snow pants.

I don't think you need a snow suit or snow pants unless he'll be playing in the snow. What you need will kind of depend on your lifestyle. Do you drive, or do you normally take public transportation? If you drive you'll need a lighter weight, non-bulky coat for the carseat, like fleece. If he's in the stroller a lot, the fleece layer and the bundleme may be enough.

I don't think I would bother with snow pants. I can't imagine he will b walking enough to walk in snow really so on the rare day tha you are out in the elements longer, you could just later fleece pants. I would go with just a warm winter coat (remembering that puffy coats are not meant to be worn in car seats).

That said I pretty much wait until I really need things to buy thwm, vs buying ahead to get good deals, since I never know what I will really need!

What are your expectations of how you'll all be spending time outside?

My son was a December baby in a similar environment (so a year old when he was first really out in the snow) and we got maybe two uses out of his snow pants (we had the bib kind, with a separate jacket). He also wore his snow boots maybe twice.

I need to buy a winter coat for my son. He will be 9 months old in early December. Should I get him a jacket or a snowsuit? If I get him a jacket, does he need snowpants or will fleece pants suffice?

Any other suggestions regarding this (e.g., brands or functionality that you recommend)? We live in the NYC area so it gets cold but it's not as extreme as Boston or VT. Someone suggested that a hood is important for warmth.

We have a BundleMe for his stroller.
