So grossed out to say this, but in our last house we had rats in the attic. Thankfully, they never made it into the house or the garage, but we heard them scurry around. Initially, we just had a pest control set up traps and had our lawn guys trim the trees back from the house so they couldn't get on the roof, which was the entry point. Eventually, we wanted a better, more permanent solution and we had the pest control fix the roof and filled/ glued up entry points. That costs us $1,000, but we didn't have any issues at all after that.

I definitely recommend having a service that inspects for entry points, seals them, and guarantees their work (if it looks like they missed something, they'll come back and reinspect free, or for a lower fee).

Or maybe get a cat? Though you never know if they will catch mice... and if they do, they may try to present them to you

All I have to say is don't use glue traps. As others noted, they don't kill the mice and you'll just come home to the most terrible screeching sound. My landlord in college put down glue traps when we had a mouse problem and then wouldn't come back once there was a mouse stuck in the trap... it was terrible.

These are my favorite traps

https://www.lowes.com/pd/TOMCAT-Snap-Trap-Mouse-Trap/50195279

I think they "pinch" less than a traditional trap (but I set off plenty of traps as a kid and survived). They work without bait if you set them according to the directions (open along walls), and the best part, you can get rid of the mouse without touching anything gross.

We used the electric traps when we lived in the city and had mice in the kitchen (!! Thanks, new neighbors!!!) they worked well and were safe to have our around the kids, unlike snap traps.

I will say also that a good company will 100% guarantee their work IF you live in a single family home. We live in a townhome, so we can’t control what our neighbors do, hence why they didn’t stop completely. Still, it kept them out of our living space and under control so that’s good enough for now (we rent).

We had mice in our garage and under kitchen sink in our old house and as soon as we saw droppings, we called a pest control company. I was not dealing with that myself! They sealed things and set traps. We caught a few then no more in the 4 or 5 years we were there after. So worth it and they would come back if the problem wasn't solved.

I would 100% not use glue traps as the mice won't be dead, just stuck. You'll have to kill it yourself or let it suffer until it dies which is horrible. Snap traps hidden away then gloves and toss the whole trap if you catch one. You definitely need to find how they're getting in which can be tricky, hence hiring someone. It was like $200-300.

We had a service come out after weeks of putting out traps at night and putting them away during the day when my son was up. DIY we caught 0 mice. The service did a full inspection, sealed up two entry point we would have never noticed and placed traps in places i wouldn’t have thought to. We use kill traps, and the only place we have ever caught them is the laundry room behind a locked door, so we leave a trap there 24/7. We have caught probably a dozen mice in the last year, always in the same spot. The service was about $300 (one time) and was 150% worth it.

Last year we had a mouse, put down traps, never caught him but also never saw him again. Well he's back and was in my ROOM under DD's playpen! I screamed bloody murder!! I can't deal. I hate the winter for this very reason!

I hear glue traps and peppermint is the best way to deal when you have kids. What do you do and has it worked?
