My son is 4 (and is required to be potty trained at this point) and frequently poops at school, attempts to wipe himself, and comes home with stained underwear. I've been buying those flushable wipes from Costco and I clean him up every evening when he gets home. He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable and we haven't had any issues thus far (and this is his second year at this school).

ETA: I just throw the soiled underwear in the wash machine and the skidmarks come out without any stain removal or pre-treatment.

@Madison43: 3 seems really early to wipe poop! Our DCP had them wipe at 4 and yes lots of poop marks in the underwear :silly:

This is going to be a really gross answer, but . . .

I was concerned about this because the boys always asked for someone to help wipe them. They don't get help at school, and I have definitely seen evidence of them not doing a perfect job. But, I've mentioned it to some friends with kids a few years older than ours, and they just laughed and said they're still waiting on their kids to learn to wipe effectively. So, apparently, there are a lot of skid marks in my future.

LO had a similar policy at school, but they were not strict about it. I told LO that he had to wipe his own bum after pooping, but he still asked the teachers anyways. They never said no and went along with it. He usually avoid pooping at school and holds it in until he comes home.

I have the same issue too and my daughter has had 3 bouts of vulvavaginitis due too poor wiping. everything is fine at home - these three infections all happened after spending the day at school.

Our daughter starts preschool tomorrow and this is one of my main concerns! She always asks for help wiping when she poops at home, but I am not sure if they will help her at preschool and before/after care. I'm sure she would be fine, except she insists on wearing dresses all the time. So, I hope she doesn't get the dresses in it :meh: But, I figure that it might not be great for the first few days, but she will catch on.

My girls pretty much refuse to poop at school unless it's a dire emergency, so for us it has been a moot point. If your LO is only in part-time, you may find the same!

We've run across all sorts of policies re: wiping. In DD2's 2's program, they definitely get a lot of toileting assistance because the kids are mostly (if not all) still training. At the same school in the 3/4 PreK program, DD1 did not really get help wiping after the few times she pooped...but I'm also not sure she requested it. In DD1's new PreK program (different school), the teachers have said they will help wipe...but once again, I suspect the kids probably have to ask - I don't think the teachers are going into the bathroom and checking bums.

Last year we had a (very) few pairs of less than pristine underwear that were not a big deal - no UTIs or anything.

For what it's worth, these are private schools. I'm pretty sure the public school system has a no-wipe policy starting in K, not 100% sure what the rule is for public preK.

LO1 (nearly 3) starts a part time preschool program this week. Kids are not required to be potty trained, so I was surprised to learn today that kids that are potty trained are required to wipe themselves (unless, in her teacher's words, if there is a "catastrophe" and then they will assist). LO1 is fully trained, day and night, but I still wipe for poop because I just don't think she could get herself clean enough. Obviously she's going to have to learn but I'm worried. I foresee itchy bums, UTIs and stained undies in our future. Any pro tips? Am I worried unnecessarily?
