i had my bottom two out last year, they were partially out and the gums around them were getting infected sometimes because they were hard to clean. recovery was way easier than i had expected and i didn't swell at all. my top two are way impacted and are not causing me any problems.

I had to have mine removed surgically, they were not only impacted, but the roots were wrapped around the nerves, so the oral surgeon had to literally crack my teeth and pull them out in pieces.

He said I healed beautifully, I had all 4 done at one time because I had to be completely out for the affair.

I had to have all four removed when I was 17 because they were impacted and starting to give me troubles. Coming from the biggest cry baby ever it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I had mine removed earlier this year. All four were impacted and they put me under completely. During recovery I was never in any pain. The first two days I was very swollen and I had bruises on my cheeks for a week or more. My doctor said I bruised so bad because my skin is so fair. I had a cashier at the grocery store ask if I was being abused and if there was someone she could call. She didn't believe me when I said the bruises were from having surgery.

I had my 3 out at age 24. The top two were all the way in, but my lower bottom was was impacted and the roots went way into my jaw. My top ones' roots went into my sinuses.

My doctor thought I would have some serious swelling and pain, but it was literally the easiest procedure ever. I was put under and when I woke it was done and I felt fine. A little sore for a couple of days, but nothing a little Tylenol couldn't handle. I was really surprised how easy the recovery was. No swelling or real pain of any kind.

I had mine taken out in phases at 24-26. My first 3 was an easy recovery, I was back to normal and eating pizza the next day. Last one however was brutal, the trauma/stress of getting it removed triggered shingles on my face and mouth on the side where the tooth was removed. I was easily out of commission for a week from all the pain. All of my wisdom teeth were impacted.

((shudders)) this thread is totally eeking me out... ugh. I never had my teeth pulled and lately I've had some pain and I think I can feel a couple of them coming in. We will be getting dental come January so I'll probably get them pulled sometime next year and sooo not looking forward to it.

Do you guys recommend going all the way under? Or just general anesthetic?

I will have to do it on a Thursday/Friday so my hubby can take care of me and baby all weekend lol

I had mine out at 29. The dentist told me it was worse to do it later because the roots grow so much deeper. In fact, I opted to leave one tooth in because it was growing so close to the nerve that it could have caused paralysis in my face. But no one told me why it was bad to wait!!! Anyways, I couldn't afford to be put completely under but they gave me some stuff that made me loopy. I was still awake but it kind of made time go by faster. The extraction was pretty normal and recovery was about a week. Eating soft food for a week feels like forever though.

I had the bottom 2 removed when I was 26 under local only because they were impacted. It was fine! I think I took only 1 pain pill after and that was in anticipation of pain but never had any. I stayed off work only one day but had planned that ahead of time...I could have gone. It is supposed to be worse if they are infected though. Mine were not.

I just had mine out a couple weeks ago! I'm 26. My bottom ones were impacted and horizontal (!!) and my top were just normal. Apparently horizontal wisdom teeth run in my family because my Mom and Brother both had horizontal ones. I also had an additional molar taken out because it had basically rotted out and they couldn't save it.

So 5 teeth in total. The recovery wasn't too bad. I was under general anesthetic. The worst part was the gauze! I just wanted it out so badly so I could move my mouth normally again. DH did the gauze changes for me. :) I ate lots of yogurt, soup, and over cooked mac and cheese. I was very thankful for real food a week later. My pain wasn't too bad, probably because I was used to pain since I had a toothache for the week before the surgery. I just took my awesome pain killers. :)

I had all four impacted and taken out when I was in college. I was on Percocet for a week straight and the withdrawals from that were pretty awful, but it was doable. A friend of mine just recently had it done and she had a pretty bad and long recovery, though... sorry I know that's not helpful!

Mine were removed at 20, and I was moving around a bit the next day, also didn't swell.
Some advice:
Jamba juice! No straw, nothing with seeds. The cold will feel good and it'll be a nice switch from yogurt or pudding.
KFC mashed potatoes and gravy are also yummy when you can't chew anything, plus they are a warm food.
Have him do the salt water rinse a lot to keep out infections.

@MrsCastro: I have TMJ issues too! It normally unlocks on its own after sometime, but once it didn't unlock so I had to have surgery to have it unlocked. That sucked major!!!

I had all four out probably sometime around when I turned 30. Initially I went in for extreme pain in one (it had decayed), they removed that one with a plan to remove the other three at a planned appointment later (the first removal was somewhat emergency). I woke up in severe pain I think a day or two later...all that shimmying around in my mouth to get the one out had irritated the others. They took the other three out and I was much happier!

None of mine were impacted, and I had just normal Novocaine (I think). The worst pain was probably what I felt before the tooth removals. I don't remember it feeling horrible after they were all out.

I had all 4 out during college and was feeling lots better within a few days - I remember returning to my summer internship and feeling well enough to work. DH had all 4 extracted two years ago (at age 30) and he had a slightly longer recovery - probably a week's worth of soup and pain meds and lying low. But nothing too bad, especially compared with the horror stories I had heard beforehand about how much tougher the recovery can be when you're an adult.

I had all 3 taken out at 26. It wasn't too bad for me except that at 4 days after when things were supposed to be pretty healed, something popped and I gushed blood so bad I went to the ER. It eventually stopped, but they had no idea what happen or where it came from, cause the stitches were still in tact. On the bright side I lost 7 lbs since I ended up too scared to eat for another week.

I had mine out in college and it wasn't too bad. They put me all the way under, which was weird. The pain medicine made me puke so I didn't take it again after the first time. I guess that means the pain was bearable! Or that I really hate throwing up. :)

I had all 4 of mine removed when I was 24. I was sedated and the only "problem" I had was that they misjudged the sedation amount so I was fully awake (but not in pain) when they removed the last two. The only side effect I had was a bruise on my lower right jaw that looked like I had drawn on myself with a yellow highlighter; pain wasn't bad at all (but I have a fairly high tolerance).
