I'm expecting my first, and DH and I are grappling with the feeling of bringing in an innocent being to a scary world. However... I think about how we can raise her to not be scared/sheltered, but to be compassionate and brave. We're never going to live in a utopia with no suffering or violence - unfortunately it is part of living with humans and always has been. But, we can raise our kids to see and be the good in the good in the world as much as possible... to be thankful that you have food to eat, a loving family, and a safe shelter to sleep in each night; to know that every person who wrongs you has a back story; that people all over the world need our help. I hope to teach her kindness, compassion, and a fiery passion to do right in the world. I don't want to shelter or protect her from living.

Definitely trying to avoid local news and commercial radio stations. My anxiety is pretty bad, but when I hear about tragedies around the world, I try to remind myself why I want to work hard to raise my son to be a compassionate, tolerant person, so he can hopefully be a force for good in the world. We can't control much, but we can strive to cultivate good.

I do a lot of thinking, reading and reflecting. The world is complex and there's lots of good and bad and I take the times where both are in such blatant display to think.

I don't watch TV news. I listen to NPR for news which doesn't focus on crime. Honestly, I don't think there's any big benefit to me watching the news, so it's not worth getting upset.

I try to focus on the stats and not the news... according to the stats, the US is much safer than it was when I was a kid! We just didn't have all the media outlets we do now, reporting on every death and serial killer. All the terrorist attacks stress me out though!

I don't really expend energy worrying about it because I can't control it so its energy wasted that could be better used elsewjere.

I just try to think about the world not being a good place since the beginnings of the human race. It's just that now, we have access to so much information and we have this belief that hindsight should be 20/20. The fact is that there have always been jerks and there will always be jerks.

As much as the mass shootings and violence scare me I am more fearful of the kind of planet my children will inherit when they become adults.

No good answer either. I get tears when I look at my innocent baby because how do we really protect them from all of this evil? My heart breaks for all of the victims and their families as they are all someone's baby. (In Paris and beyond)

I had to turn off the news yesterday and can only read it in small doses. The worst are things involving kids- I just can't handle it. And I hold my baby a little tighter.

I have no good answer. I justwant to say you're not alone.

I worry about further attacks. We live in the city that houses Canadas east coast navy, a prime target for nyone trying to strike a blow to Canada.
I worry about our decision TTC #2 in a world that's like this right now.

Before I had my baby, I did not worry much about anything. In particular, I could read news stories about the most horrible things happening, and while it was sad, I never considered the possibility of anything happening to me or my family.

Now, I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack every time I read the news. It seems like there's always a new story about kids accidentally shooting each other with guns, school shootings, etc., and now the attacks in Paris. How do you keep from losing your mind and freaking out about the possibility of something happening to your family when the world seems to get more and more dangerous every minute?
