I don't think there's any harm in trying dairy elimination but since I see it coming up, I will just add that my LO is mspi (he poops blood if I eat anything with a milk or soy protein in it) and cutting those items from my diet had cleared up his poop. It hasn't made any difference whatsoever in his spit up. In our case, he's just a spitter no matter what I eat.

@HLK208: :( G's did, too. For what it's worth, at her 4 week appointment, the ped said he thought it was reflux but didn't want to put her on meds for it. So, I decided on my own to eliminate dairy after she presented a few other symptoms a few weeks later (screaming, yellow/green poop, and a stuffy nose). Within a week, little miss Mount Vesuvius was screaming less and spitting less. That's when we really noticed the reflux issues, though-she would arch her back, and it smelled like pure stomach acid. So, we got her on Zantac, which made her much happier. I eliminated soy a few weeks later, when the spit up came back, and recently beef, since it came back again after eating beef a bunch over Labor Day.

I'm hoping that this isn't your issue, but if you're willing, it might not be a bad idea to try. Just a word of caution: I had to eliminate all dairy, even butter, for it to be effective. I learned this the hard way over the 4th of July. I had been dairy free for two weeks and decided to spoil myself on cookies over the weekend. BAM, back came the spitting and screaming. I was so, so hopeful that I was wrong, that she wasn't intolerant. But I am glad that we've identified at least some of the issues, and now she feels better!

Good luck, lady

Probiotics and gas drops seem to help my four-month-old (who is super spitty) spit up a fair bit less. My doctor didn't think it was worth putting her on reflux meds since she doesn't seem to be in pain.

@LovelyPlum: wow, that's interesting. The spit up smells SO bad. I don't eat a ton of dairy but I should probably try cutting it out first to see if it helps :bummed:

Miss A was a happy chucker as a result of her gulpy latch (tongue and lip tie) and my forceful letdown, so her spitup was due to gas rather than reflux. We got on better with frequent feeds of lower volumes (offering one breast at a time) and limiting the comfort sucking.

@MapleMoose: @gilmoregirl: @travellingbee: @fussygal: @yin: @bpcmarj: @Baby Boy Mom: it is amazing what a difference the diet change has made! We are still having some issues, but all I have to do is accidentally re-introduce a food into my diet, and it makes me realize how much better things are now!

@hlk208: for what it is worth, G was/is a decent weight-gainer, except for a few weeks around her 8 week appointment. It is amazing to me, because she seriously spit so, so much.

LO is a *crazy,* but happy, spitter. It has ended up being a combination of MSPI, beef intolerance, and reflux. The Zantac has made the spitting stop smelling like acid, but the only thing that has lessened the spitting was eliminating dairy, then eventually soy and beef, for us.

P was a big spitter (though happy and gaining), but like others weeliminated dairy and soy based on blood in her stool and the spitting stopped almost immediately and never came back after that. We were only dairy and soy free for 6 weeks.

DS2 spit up a lot, but he was happy, gaining weight, and didn't appear uncomfortable. When I noticed a change in his poop (mucus like and occasional blood), I changed my diet due to suspected MSPI and possible food allergies. He improved within a few days of my diet change.

Blake spits up a ton (occasionally enough to soak himself, me, the boppy, etc). He's on Prevacid and it doesn't stop the spitting up. Instead, it makes the spit up less acidic so it is not painful. He used to scream and arch his back after eating. Now he spits up and is still just as happy as can be. Alice is on Zantac and has almost entirely stopped spitting up. However we suspect she's just outgrown her reflux. We want to try taking her off it but we're sort of scared!

Yes! She spit up a TON in the early days. We tried Zantac and Prilosec for reflux but neither worked and it turned out to be MSPI. Since I adjusted my diet it's basically a non-issue now! I can't bekieve the diffrence it's made.

Yes, mine spit up an amazing amount. We got Zantac and it didn't do anything it seemed. Then I ended up cutting out dairy on the nurse's suggestion and that stopped it almost immediately. After 6 months I reintroduced and he was fine.

K spat up A LOT and we were prescribed meds too. But she hated it and it was impossible to give it to her. So I just tried my best to keep her elevated, she wore bibs for months, had to change her all the time, keep washcloths to wipe up everything. I even let her sleep on my chest propped up for a month when it was really bad. Then one day it just seemed to stop.

My 5 month old is a big spitter. Right after feedings, hours after feedings, sitting up, lying on the floor. Nothing I've done has ever seemed to make a noticeable difference in his spit up. (like feeding less frequently, more frequently but for less time, more burping, changing diet. etc). He's just a spitter. He's not bothered by it and he gains and grows fine, so his doctor is unconcerned.

His doctor told us he believes every baby is born with reflux to some extent, but the ones who benefit from medicine are those who are in pain and/or not growing. Otherwise, meds don't really help. So we've never tried any medication. I'm hopeful he'll grow out of the spitting soon -- he doesn't spit at all overnight/in his crib anymore, so that's something.

My DD spat up a ton until she was about 5 months. She didn't have reflux, but did have gas. I gave her gas drops until she was about 8-10 weeks, and then she didn't need them anymore, and she seemed totally fine. I was worried about weight gain too since it seemed like she puked so much, but she was always gaining every time we had her weighed.

My LO spit up A LOT. You did it hand her over without a big blanket. Dr was not concerned since she wasn't fussy and gained on track. She spit up even after solid foods. She was on the gentlease formula, which didn't make a bit if difference. She was just a spitter upper. She's now 2 and is fine now.

@HLK208: J did the same thing! It was so bad we'd have to change his clothes several times a day - even my mom/sister commented that it was more than their babies ever did. But it wasn't a concern to the midwife/ped and I didn't have him on any medications. Like N, he was gaining weight normally, seemed happy overall and ate really well. It felt like it was a larger out-put than in-take but turns out he was just fine! It lasted a few months but I think by about 6 months he had outgrown it.

We did a round of Prilosec then a round of Zantac. Neither worked. In LO's case it was undiagnosed allergies to milk, soy, and eggs exacerbating her reflux. Once we got her on Alimentum hypoallergenic formula the spit up problem resolved. Good luck!

My son is 7 months and still spits up a lot. The doc prescribed Zantac when he was about 2 months and he took it for a while but honestly we didn't notice any difference....so we stopped. He doesn't get upset when spitting up, he's gaining well, he's a happy little guy. It's just annoying because of the mess. The doc isn't concerned so I'm sure he'll grow out of it.

We later heard that a lot of peds start with a Zantac script because of insurance/cost reasons. We changed to prevacid and the spit up is a thing of the past.

Did any medications STOP the spit up? N spits up after every feeding...not just a little, but a lot. It covers her clothes, our clothes, our furniture, the floors, etc. Her doctor prescribed Zantac but it doesn't seem to help. She hates taking it and she spits up the same amount.

The odd part is, she's still gaining (a little but not a ton) and she's happy. The ped thought I just had an oversupply and her tummy was getting too full from her strong sucking reflex. I try feeding her less but it doesn't seem to work - she spits up still.

Any ideas? She'll be two months on Monday and we also have an appt with her ped. He keeps saying unless she wasn't gaining, then we would look further into it.
