It was a long process for us because daycare refused to let him go in just underwear and in the beginning the pull up was treated as just another diaper.

We started out by using underwear at home in the evening for a few weeks. Then we started a reward system with gummy bears at school. Every time he went potty on the toilet and his pull up stayed dry they would let him have a gummy bear. It took a few weeks but he finally started getting it. His last week in that daycare he was finally able to go in underwear full time with minimal accidents. We started the process in April and he was in underwear full time by the end of July.

It was another 6 weeks for him to poop in the potty consistently.

@Chillybear: I have no idea why but DD HATES pull ups (she says they're itchy??) They were super useful for training in that the thought of having to wear them was so annoying for her that she would use the potty. She can be super stubborn sometimes.

"You can either go potty, or I will have to put a pull up on you". Immediately she runs to the washroom and does her thing. Haha!! I still keep a few around in case she goes another potty strike but we don't really have any issues anymore.

@Chillybear: As far as I can tell, pull ups are mostly just more expensive diapers, and they're easier to pull up and down like underpants, so instead of having to put the kid on the changing table, you can take them to the potty, pull the diaper down and up. They don't have any indicators of wetness or anything that I found, but a little less absorbent than regular diapers.

My girl is 2 1/2 and I cant even get her to sit on the potty seat or ring. she wants nothing to do with it. she stopped telling us when she goes. Daycare doesnt start working with them until they move into the next classroom which maybe around june. We tried the long weekend method in November and I could not even get her to sit on the seat. the 2nd day she held it from 8am-12:30 when she took a nap and 3:30-6:30 when she woke up, because she refused to sit on the seat.

What is the difference between a diaper and a pull up other than they step into it? Is it more uncomfortable than a diaper? do they realize they're wet sooner? I bought a pack on clearence at target and I'm thinking of trying it out this weekend

We did a slow start, a few months of using the potty on weekends and asking day care to take him to the bathroom regularly. And then we trained for real on vacation. We were at a small resort and never more than 5 minutes from a bathroom, so it wasn't as bad as it sounds.

@Mrs. Carrot: We just put her in diapers to go out and went diaper free/underwear at home. We never did pullups. I know it's contrary to a lot of the advice that it is confusing for the kid, but we found that as she got it she would just stay dry in her diaper and that was when we started to know she was ready to make the switch 100%. It seemed to work well for us. For reference, we started when she was about 2y4m and she was probably fully trained by 2 and a half. Also she was def showing signs of being ready for about a few months before we trained. Also also, we used m&ms to bribe/reward her for trying and using the potty.

we had a veerrrry slow start to potty training--he was in pull-ups forever, at least 6 months. i was kind of hoping that daycare taking him to potty would have done the trick, but i think the lack of consistency at home kinda killed that dream.

we ended up doing a diaper free weekend. i didn't want to wait for a 3-day weekend or take time off, so we just did it in 1 weekend. we took him to the potty about every 15-20 minutes. it was painful. i had to drink a lot of wine. the second day was a little better, and we started to use some underwear. he wasn't 100% by any means when monday rolled around, but we took him to daycare with a ton of change of clothes and told them that we had made the switch.

they took him to potty every hour and he actually did really well. much much better than i expected.

it's been a few months and it's still a work in progress. we still don't trust him to go on his own all the time (he does sometimes, but like i said we don't trust him) so we have to remind him and make him go a lot. there was 1 month where we dealt with a lot of poop accidents.

anyway, i feared it so much, but diving in for the diaper free weekend was what really made the change for us.

good luck! just remember that when you start, if you feel like it's not working, that's completely normal. from what i hear, there's not a whole lot of progress until the second day.

ETA: we had previously tried a weekend with underwear and that was a huge failure. depends on the kid. also, we still have him in pull-ups for naps at home (he stays dry at daycare but i'm too scared) and diapers for overnight.

Day care started taking them every 1.5-2 hours. She was responding so we did panties that weekend. She was doing pretty good, minus poops. Then she wore pull ups at school but panties when at home. After a month she lost all interest so we went back to just pull ups and not taking her unless she said something. Day care still took her. She started telling us every time she went in her pull up and wanting to be changed. She also started to tell us when she needed to go which was perfect cause we had already decided over Labor Day weekend we were doing boot camp. She knew what she needed to do, when she needed to go but was using the pull ups cause they were on. We stayed home the first day and she was naked from the waist down. Then the next day we went out, she was commando for 3 days (one day at day care). Then we moved her to panties cause day care didn't like commando. But she did great, within a week, she had pooping down. She right away stayed dry during nap, so now is just in a pull up at night.

@Mrs. Carrot: we still used pull ups in the car for a bit after she was "trained". It was a precaution and we explained that it was just in case but to still let mommy and daddy know if she had to go potty. I think we only had a little peepee in a pull up once because we didn't get to a bathroom in time! Daycare actually told us to send her in underwear earlier than we thought she was ready! :)

@regberadaisy: I totally understand that too, which is why I'd like to give kiddo a bit of a push. I just worry about giving her mixed messages by doing underwear for a weekend and then back to pull ups for the week. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

We went diaper free over a weekend for a final push. But daycare will also help with potty training too. They won't let you go diaper free until they are ready and pretty much trained. Completely understandable as I wouldn't want my kids to be playing around kids peeing/pooping on the floor all the time! :P

@Revel: So did you guys just stay at home until you felt like she was ready to try outings? How long did it take? I'm totally fine with a slow approach, I just have no idea how to really start.

We basically trained evenings and weekends for a month or 6 weeks. When we finally got to a point of going on short outings in underwear, we started sending her to daycare in underwear. She had accidents for the first 2 days at daycare and then it started to click and she's done really well since then.

We also waited to start at daycare until she was good with #2 on the potty. She refused for a few weeks until I caught her once when she was about to go in her underwear and put her on the potty. I think it was so novel that it caught her interest and she was good with it from then on.

This was a longer process than the 3 day method obviously, but was pretty low key and there was not a lot of drama or power struggles, a win in my book!

Will day care let her wear underwear if she's not reliably trained? When we moved up rooms to where all the other kids were potty trained, the new teacher told us to just send her in panties with lots of extra clothes, and not to stress about accidents. She was 100% trained 4 days in. Peer pressure is a powerful thing.

I'm struggling with this one. LO turns 3 in June. Her daycare won't move her up to the 3s class until she's in underwear. Of course, kid is completely disinterested. She will use the potty when we put her on- daycare does it every 2 hours, and we try to mimic the same or earlier if she had a meal, drinks, etc. But she doesn't initiate at all- she doesn't care if her diaper is dirty and doesn't want to be interrupted. Also, completely refuses to poop, only in the diaper.

I'm thinking about taking a few days off and cooping us up at home and going the naked route (God help us all), but I'm worried about it not taking and wasting the time as a result. We thought about doing it over the weekends, but I keep getting hung up on inconsistency of pull ups/underwear/back to pull-ups. I'm thinking about trying a reward chart but she's not usually one to respond to rewards so we'll see. I also hate to push her if she's not ready yet, but I'd also hate to have her get left behind.

Ideas?
