This thread inspired me to look up swimming, art and music classes - there is a toy store/family center place that does it all in this small town. So exciting!

Subscribing! I am about to give my notice and SAH at least for a few months until we move into our new house in SC and get settled...Then however long it takes to find a good job. I an totally sick of the super-corporate big company thing so I'm going to look for a sales job in a smaller, less demanding setting. Even part time or job share would be FABULOUS! But I'm definitely staying home at least until Aug/Sept...My DH works offshore so it will be just H & I for a lot of the time!

I felt stir crazy in my 4 months at home (not the same I know), but I went to a baby class once a week and met great mom friends that way (Gymboree, little gym, any of those kinds of things would work). I also went for either a jog or walk with the baby every day. Baby library time was on our schedule as well. I guess I was happiest when I treated staying at home like a job :)

@Andrea: I'd like to! We may send him to daycare a few days a week or try to find music/art classes to go to together. He loves daycare now and I think he needs the interaction with other kids.

I am wondering this as well! I worked, stayed at home for 2 years and am back working again. I don't know if I will continue when my contract is up in a year.

Yes - I joined a bunch of mom Meetup groups in my area that have been fun. We also go to the library on Wednesdays for a music/story class and I have met some more moms there. I also have the luxury that my parents and MIL live so close so they come over 1-2 times per week, so that I can just get out and do things on my own.

Me! :) I wanted to stay at home once DD was born, but I wasn't able to quit until DS was born, almost two years later. My transition was hard, but that might have also been because we added an extra kid in there before I quit. I would say things got much better after 8-10 weeks, and then again after 3 months. I had a lot of friends in the area, and the kids were going to daycare two days a week, so that was actually really nice.

When we moved in December it got a lot harder again. I've tried joining a couple moms groups, but that hasn't worked out so well. Also the neighborhood we were in had almost no young families, so it's been difficult to meet people. Last week we bought a new house and moved to a different community with a lot more children, so I am hopeful we'll be able to make some new friends.

My best advice is to have a schedule (like @MamaBehr: suggested) and to try and get out every day, even if it's just for a walk. It's easy to fall into the routine of not showering/dressing/getting ready, but I know I feel much better if I DO something every day instead of just staying around the house. And try to get some kids-free time every week, if you can. Even just an hour away from the house and the babies running errands can feel like a mini vacation!

Thanks! I am a little concerned about finding friends/groups because we are moving. I'm hoping there are some good social outlets! I did research that one of the big fitness centers has swimming lessons and also has child care ($1 an hour!) so I feel like that could be a good place to meet people.

I know in my community there are a lot of support groups for SAHM. They do a playgroup once a week and other activities.

This applies to me now. I am not sure if I will return to work. But with 2 kids, I really do not have much time to do anything besides look after them so I haven't done any new social things pp's are talking about. I already have some mommy friends anyway. I am not missing my job, though!

I completely agree with @weagle find friends! I made friends through swim classes, the neighborhood pool, and a boot camp class I attend with my kiddos. If I didn't have this support network of Mommy friends, I wouldn't like being a SAHM. It is also great for DD and DS to interact with other little kids on a daily basis.
It also helps to have a schedule, on Monday's we go to the library, on Tuesday we do their My Gym class, Wednesday is chill day, Thursday and Friday are playdate days.

I didn't make that transition, but my tip applies to SAHMs in any situation. Find friends! Take classes, join playgroups, or whatever it takes to get out of the house. Being a SAHM is wonderful, but it can be a bit isolating.

Who went back to work but then ultiamtely decided to SAH? I quit my job to SAH for a year during my husband's fellowship. I am romanticizing about how wonderful it is going to be. Was your transition from WOHM to SAHM wonderful? Tips?
