I would just caution that it can be really hard for children to adjust to a new babysitter when mom is in the house. I have always been pretty quick to leave my kids with new caregivers. I also think while it's good to know what my routine is with the kids, the caregiver and my babies will also need to figure out what works best for them.

When I was a nanny I had about an hour in the morning the first day where the parents showed me around and told me what to do and that was it. It worked great! Thats what happened with the 3 families I worked with.

@agold: Oh gosh, my post was confusing. We've had our nanny for several years. #2 already arrived last year. We were in a nanny share previously and when #2 came along it stopped being a nanny share and worked just with our 2. LO1 is in mother's day out as well so for a lot of the day it's just LO2. She didn't get a raise when #2 came along because it was still 2 kids (just all on my dime :silly: ).

If it were me and I had the funds and had already selected the future nanny, I would start having the nanny come over one evening a week now. I know this sounds crazy, but having LO1 totally used to our nanny was so amazing. His world was completely upside down at home, but the nanny / school remained consistent. I think it also helped that she had a really good routine with him and they had a strong bond. Another option would be for the nanny to come 1 day a week during maternity leave. Again, somewhat a money drain..... but welcome to life with 2!

@agold: We just pay a monthly amount so I think we paid half of that. Our "nannies" are our in-laws.... they provide in-home care, so, I figured it was parallel.

we had the nanny start about a month before i went back to work, but just 4 hours twice per week. i loved it that way. the first day i think i only managed to stay away about an hour, but it allowed for a more gradual adjustment for both of us and i thought that was helpful. plus i was definitely in need of some mommy time so i could run errands, go to the gym, etc., so it was a nice opportunity for me too. ultimately i ended up ramping up my work hours before my leave officially ended so we actually increased from that schedule about two weeks before my leave ended.

btw, i also totally did not have the baby on a solid schedule that i needed to show her, haha. i was just like: he just ate, he may or may not eat or sleep while you are here, best of luck!

ETA: we pay her by the hour so we just paid for the hours she worked. she was only working part time at the time so she was happy to start with a modified schedule.

@DesertDreams88: Thanks. This makes sense to me. We will be having the nanny just two days a week, so maybe starting her back two weeks before would work in the way you described. Gosh, we don't totally have a routine yet, but I will try to figure out which routine is naturally occurring at this point. Did you pay the nanny a reduced amount since you were having her just half days? Or did you pay the full amount?

@LBee: Thanks for sharing what you did! I didn't even quite think about showing where things are and such. But that is a good point. I am not totally worried about the new baby (except that I'm overly concerned in general about having someone watch my babies). I am really worried about how my 21 month old is going to adjust to this. She is shy about new people and I know is going to lose her mind when we leave. Will you keep your current nanny when you have your second baby? Are you upping the nanny's pay because of the second baby?

There wasn't an older kid in the mix, so that might be a little different. We did 1 full day of her at the house (paid, of course) prior to me starting work. I had done a pretty good job of recording his schedule - it was mainly to show her how things worked in the house, where things were, etc. I did have our cleaning lady (who I have known for years) clean the day she officially started so there would be someone else familiar with the house (and the baby) there. I also liked that she was less obviously observing and could report back if she noticed anything weird. Personally, I was less concerned about the transition and more concerned she might not be able to find / work xyz. I wanted the least amount of interruptions once I started back at work, I knew it would just break my concentration.

We did 2 half days with us there, explicitly walking through all steps of the "routine" and then talking more during nap. Then we did 2 half days with us out of the house. Then fulltime care started.

We're going to do the same with the addition of #2 this July.

I am going to have to get an in-home nanny for my two girls when I return to work in mid-August. I think I should start the nanny sooner than the first day I go back. How early did you start your nannies? And what did you specifically do - a few hours the first few days? Stay at home with the nanny or leave for a bit? I would really appreciate hearing what you all did. Thank you!
