I work downtown, so I just suit up at lunch and go for a run, usually 3-4 miles (although it's shortened/gotten slower now that I'm pregnant). Occasionally I'll go to the racquetball court at the top of my building and do a bodyweight workout. Daycare doesn't open until 7:30, and I have to be at work at 8, so there is no way that I can workout in the mornings. DH and I will usually do a run together on the weekends with DD in the stroller. I used to take the time twice a week to do a Pure Barre class, and I miss it.

I haaaaaate getting up neatly and am not a morning person but I had to accept that there is no other time during the day to consistently get a good workout in . So I go M-F at 6 am and alternate between strength training with dumbells and running 3 miles.

I think this is such a struggle but I agree that habits can become self-perpetuating. I WOH FT usually gone from the house 8-5 including daycare drop off and pick up. DH is usually out of the house by 5:30 so getting to the gym early is not realistic for me. But I do get up around 5:30 and do a 30 minute Jillian something 2 mornings a week and a longer one on Sundays. I recently decided to up to 3 mornings a week and this is the first week. Evenings do not work for me so this is the best/only time.

I was not able to do this until LO was older, sleeping better, and waking up at a more consistent time. (18 months) Last fall if she woke up early she watched Elmo on you tube while I worked out. Now she has a toddler clock so I know when she will wake up. So I work out, shower and dry my hair and then she is up at 6:45.

For those of you who say you aren't morning people: My husband is NOT a morning person, but he was committed to making the morning work out work because it's really the only time we can do it. He read a really interesting book on habits and how you can successfully create them - basically the idea is that a habit = trigger + action + reward. For a morning gym trip, the trigger is your alarm going off, the action is getting your butt out of bed and into the gym, and the reward is whatever you want. For DH, it's me waiting for him at home with a giant mug of coffee; for me, it's the fact that DH gets DD up and fed on my work out days so I get to come home to a hot shower rather than a crying, hungry toddler.

It is not fun or easy to get up early every day, but it only took about 3-4 weeks to settle into the habit. Now I LOVE my gym mornings.

I'm in the same boat - never any time to work out! No time at lunch. Some good ideas in here for sure.

I sometimes try to walk more, even though its not a "real" workout. I walk more in the office. And sometimes skip my shuttle to the office from the train and walk instead! Or I walk really far to get lunch. Is walking more an option?

I struggled with this for a long time and now that my kids are slightly older and more independent I am making the time for myself.

Sun/Tues/Thur - 50 mins Bar
Mon/Wed/Fri - 25 mins elliptical

If DH will be home in the evening I will wait till he gets home so he can interact with the kids but if he isn't then the kids can play in the basement or watch their Kindles while I exercise.

I have been unhappy with my body for a long time and if feels good to finally be doing something about it!

My 3 yr old DD loves to do Bar Method with me - its adorable! :silly:

@grizz: almost the exact same thing.

Never been a morning person - I could sleep until 10 if uninterrupted! But this is important to me so I've been really pushing myself and it's consistent now. 3x a week I am up at 4:50 or 5am to hit bodypump or bootcamp class, and then get my other two workout sessions in during the weekend. I hate it and it's hard but I do it and I'm proud. It has gotten easier with time, and like you I have to plan for it and not talk myself out of it. I am definitely worried for when this semester starts and I have FT nursing courses 5 days a week AND working 20 hrs a week. But I'm determined!

I'm a little against the grain, because I don't have a set workout time, but I am committed to getting, at minimum, 10,000 steps and 25 flights of stairs on my Fitbit every day. So instead of "working out" in the course of my day I take the stairs and the long way around. It works out to the equivalent of around 4 miles a day. I have a crazy goal of not breaking my streak for the rest of this pregnancy. And with my job, some days it is really easy and some days it is really hard. (I've been doing it consistently since 7/13.)

And bonus, DH has been away for two weeks, and he asked me (14* week pregnant), if I lost weight. :) I haven't, but at least my thighs aren't spreading with my belleh!

* Holy cow, I actually calculated wrong. How different the second time around is! Woo-hoo for an extra week!

I work 9-5 and my commute is anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour. A few times a week we get home, walk the dog, she eats, and then we go for a run in the jogging stroller. On Saturdays, we go to the gym and I run on the treadmill and attend a barre class while she plays in the playroom.

@hotchildinthecity: Yes, I tend to agree, but the problem, at least in my workplace, is that no one views blocked time as "unavailable" because everyone is so overscheduled. I think part of the problem, for me at least, is that I can't consistently find a block of time that is open.

Following . . . I'm only pregnant and struggling with working out while working. I leave for work around 8am and get home around after 8pm (I'm a lawyer so there is a lot of variation, but billing an average of 9 hours a day usually means being away from home 12 hours or so). My most successful stretch was when I worked out at lunch and just calendared it as "PT"--I think my bosses respected the appointment since it sounded medical-ish (and I did have some PT to do). Mornings can work for a while, but it's so tempting to hit snooze instead.

My husband is usually gone by 5:30 am and often earlier, so it's not feasible to do mornings at this point. I guess I could do it after LO goes down to sleep, but that pushes my bed time awfully late after showering, and I need a lot of sleep.
