Mine won't be a full hour but maybe 45 minutes each way and we have signed LO up for a daycare closer to home (well where we plan to live, and where we will stay at first) than work.

We both work an hour away from daycare (in opposite directions) I do drop off since I go into work later- and DH does pickup since he gets out of work later. We haven't had a call with him being sick (yet- fingers crossed) so I am not sure who would go pick him up. (although we are at an in home daycare- so I think she would just keep him if he was sick)

I have a 45-60 minute commute, while DH has a 5 minute walk to work, while he's at his current job (a secondment from his "real" job). We chose close to home for obvious reasons, but even if we were both downtown for work, I still think I'd pick close to home because if I have to pick up a sick kid, I'd rather get her home quickly, than have to spend close to a hour on a crowded subway. We'd never drive to work in our current locations, so that's our situation.

I also work from home a couple days a week, so it wouldn't make sense for her to be near work!

I've thought about this a lot because J will likely move to a daycare sometime within the next year. I think that we will choose one close to home because it will make it easier for DH to pick up J because my schedule changes a lot with work and school. Plus it would be nice to have something in walking distance, and in the off chance that I need to stay home and study one day, I can still drop him at daycare.

We choose close to home, but it's doable since DH is much closer to home. I'm the one with the hour and 15 commute, so if LO ever gets sick, DH is on call to pick him up. There are times when he's in a meeting and can't pick him up until it's over, and they've had no problem with it.

One really big pro is that we can take him even when we have a day off. So for example, we got new windows on Friday...while DH had the day off, we took him to day care anyway so that he could have a relatively normal day instead of trying to sleep between the banging and the freezing cold temps. We also sent him to day care when we took a day off to go Christmas shopping too. Just a lot easier to do when you don't have to worry about dragging a toddler in and out of stores.

@purrpletulips: Cool, thanks for the feedback. In the town we are currently in, a 'long commute' is considered 30 mins, hah! But by the time we do this we will have been at the center for over a year and a half, so I would hope they could work with us.

@Bookish: they were very understanding about the commute, many of the parents had a similar if not longer one. Typically when they'd call to let me know she needed picked up I'd try and give them an idea of when I would get there; they'd usually keep her in the office until I got there and often told me not to rush. If that is a concern, I would suggest talking with the center being in the suburbs they may encounter this frequently. We're no longer at the daycare center (two LO was too expensive) but we have the same understanding with our current sitter, when she calls we give her an idea of when we'll get there but try to get there as soon as possible.

@purrpletulips: Have you found it to be an issue when you've had to pick her up sick, or is your daycare pretty understanding that it will take some time to go get her?

We chose close to home because we each had an hour long commute but in opposite directions. Having daycare close to home allowed me to do drop off and DH to do pickup. It also allowed us to utilize daycare on days we were off work but needed to get something done that was easier without DD.

@lawbee11: haha! Thought you might!

Yes, if we did this, DH would do dropoffs, and I would do pickups, with him working 8-5 and me working 7-4 (pending boss approval... who knows... lol) which is why I'm thinking having her closer to work might be better, since we could just do her in daycare from 7:30-4:15ish.. I guess I'm just worried that she'll have an hour in the car each way.

My poor DH... he loves me despite my schemes ;)

ETA: Plus, my daycare is super cheap!!!

@Bookish: I fully support this move :)

My commute isn't quite that long (it's about 45-50 min). Do you and your DH work the same hours? Or could one of you do drop off and the other do pickup? My DH will be doing drop off and I will be doing pickup, so LO is in daycare about 5 min from our house. If I had to do both and had a 1hr 15 min commute I would probably put LO in daycare near work because otherwise she'd be in daycare for a really long time each day (though it would suck if you ever needed to bring her to daycare but didn't need to go to work).

Close to home and doctors.

My commute is long, but my sons daycare is in our hometown. My parents are there to do pick up and drop off, but our situation is public transportation commuting.

How do daycare dropoffs/pickups work? Do you have your LO in a daycare that is close to your home, or to your work?

Essentially, DH and I are throwing around the idea (ok, I am, and I'm trying to convince him) of moving from our current town to a suburb of a big city. We would keep our current jobs, and commute into our current town, which would be about an 1hr 15min commute (it's through country mostly, so not a lot of traffic to worry about).

My main concern though, is what to do about LO's daycare (if we do this, and it's a big *if*). Do I keep her in her current daycare that is only 15 mins from my job (and would be on my way home?), or do I switch her to a daycare in the new town (and then have an hour commute to go get her if she's sick?)

There are pros/cons to both, and we probably would not be doing this until she's about 18 months (so a year away), but I'm just curious about the logistics.
