@Mrs. Lion: J's the same way! No matter what time I put him down... Could be 6:30, could be 8:30... He'll still wake at the buttcrack of dawn at 5:30-6! Don't these kids know how amazing sleep is? But hey, looks like little lion is back to falling asleep without a fuss... Maybe everything will be smoother from here on out!

@Mrs. High Heels: I could definitely try a later bedtime again. We have done that in the past and it has been a disaster...still wakes up early and is super cranky and then takes even longer naps the following day. Sigh.

Put him down tonight at 6:40 and he was asleep without a peep by 6:50. I have never been so relieved!!

@Mrs. Lion: What an amazing napper! 6:30 pm bedtime sounds a little early to me with a 3:30 pm nap wake-up time. Have you tried pushing his bedtime back to 7 pm? Maybe that's why he's fighting sleep at night?

I know our kiddos are really close in age. J turned 18 months today. I try not to let J sleep past 3 pm, and it's usually 4-4.5 hours between last nap and bedtime. Based on his solid naps though, I wouldn't want to push to one nap if there was no reason to yet. I transitioned both my kids to one nap when I noticed they were fighting the first nap of the day more and more. N didn't transition to one nap until 20 months, J transitioned at 16 months.

@Mrs. High Heels: he still sleeps 1-2 hours in the am (i decide when to wake him up based on how early he was up in the am, so if he was up at 5 i will let him sleep the whole 2 hours etc.) Usually its around an hour and a half.

So he wakes around 6, naps between 8/8:30 and 10, and then again from 1-3. Sometimes he will sleep even longer but i try not to let him sleep past 3:30 so that it doesnt get wothin 3 hours of bedtime. He goes to bed at 6:30. He never ever fights naps. He is always asleep within 5-10 minutes, sometimes even sooner.

@Mrs. Lion: I thought about it some more, and after reading the responses it sounds like your little guy is still sleeping really well on his 2 nap schedule, so I wouldn't want to rock the boat right at this moment, especially since you just came back from a trip (maybe he needs more than a couple days to adjust), in the middle of a wonder week, and it's the 18 month sleep regression time (not all kids go through it... but still... just in case). Given these factors, I would wait to change things up.

I think it could be a combination of those things. Sounds like he is ready to be on one nap, but can't know for sure without a few more details (what times are his current naps and how long are they? Does he fight naps?). The 18 month sleep regression is also right around the corner, so it may be that as well.

Ok, im convinced! I have been waiting for him to start showing sogns that hes ready (he still falls asleep for both naps immediately and almost always has to be woken up) but its worth a try!

i would definitely try pushing him to one nap at that age. we pushed charlie to one nap at 15 months and he got more, better sleep that way. olive dropped to 1 nap at 17 months though she could have stayed on the 2 nap schedule a little while longer, all the kids in her daycare were already on a 1 nap schedule. by 18 months most kids have dropped their morning nap.

it will be bumpy... it was for both kids when they dropped their nap, but overall it was a positive. a huge break in the middle of the day, your morning opens up for more activities, and they get more, better sleep overall. and it might make you a happier mama!

I can't believe he's still on 2 naps! We haven't been on 2 naps since maybe 10-11 months. Sadie's 18m and sleeps 7:30p-9:30a and naps 12:30-3:30. The naps are flexible though depending on what we have going on.

It could very well be a phase, but I would think at that age he is probably ready for only one nap.

@Mrs. Lion: I agree with what @NovBaby1112: says. Start on the earlier side for naps and they will gradually get later. My goal was nap starting 4-5 hours after wake up, and bedtime 4-5 hours after nap ended.

@Weagle: if he wakes up at 6 and goes to bed at 6:30/7 (normally anyway) what time should his nap start? Do i just change his schedule and keep him up until that time? Or do i move the nap time gradually?

@Mrs. Lion: get out of the house during that time, snacks, anything to distract him until a later time, but don't push him too much at first. for awhile, you may have to do a 10/10:30 nap and hope he sleeps awhile and then an early bedtime. once he adjusts, you can gradually move it later to a more normal afternoon time.

@Mrs. Lion: I totally get him wanting to sleep all the time. When we transition to one nap, LO was sleeping 13+ hours overnight and then taking a 3.5-4+ hour nap every day. It was kind of glorious. Stay extra busy! Or have playdates at your house. We packed the schedule during the transition phase.

I know traveling can mess up sleep, even now that you're back. I'd give it a few more days before trying to make any changes.

That being said, Xander is almost 18 months and more often than not takes only one nap a day, so perhaps your LO is ready for it!

it could definitely be a phase and wonder weeks do cause havoc on sleep for us, as well as travel...but i think at 17 months i would probably just make the switch to 1 nap now since sleep isnt good at the moment- it may help. the last thing you want is to finally get back on track/over the WW, and then have sleep get bad again because he's ready for 1 nap.

I think it could just be a phase. Toddlers are weird. That said, my LO was definitely on one nap by then (but she typically dropped naps early), and her sleep went from really good to freaking amazing. I don't know what all went on, but she was a sleeping machine for a really, really long time after transitioning to one nap. The transition may be a little rough, but all transitions are. I say just push through it and make it happen. Plus, life on one nap is more fun :)

So my 17 month old has always had the same bedtime routine and has always gone down at night with no issues (with the exception of sickness or occasional developmental leaps). He doesnt like being rocked sleep and loves his crib.

About a week ago he started taking much longer to fall asleep. He would roll around in his crib, play with his hands or his blanket, and then eventually go to sleep on his own, about an hour after we put him down.

This week we traveled to see my ils, and bedtime was a screamfest. 2+ hours every night, until i let him curl up with me and watch a 15 minute baby einstein video...then he was ready for bed and went down without a peep.

I thought this was a travel related regression, but it has continued the two nights since coming home.

He is going through a big language explosion right now, and i looked on the wonder weeks chart and he is smack dab in the middle of a stormy period. So that all makes sense. But he seems well rested during the day, even though he is getting about 2 hours less of sleep than he was a week ago. He is mostly sleeping through the night, but wakes up 2-4 times crying (he goes back to sleep on his own.) He is still waking up at the same time in the am, even though he is going to sleep much later.

He still goes down easy for both of his naps, but I'm wondering if i should switch him to one nap now to possibly help with getting bedtime back on track, or if this is just a phase that has to play out and that messing with his naps will make it worse because he will become overtired.

Any ideas or experiences? Thanks!! :)
