@mrs. bird: @sorrycharlie: Yep, we're the same way, I'm an emotional rollercoaster when we argue and he is super loud and has such a deep voice someone might think it was serious, but it never is... he's just loud... if anyone called the police we both would be like "WTF??".

Totally different if you hear threats or see violence, but yelling and arguing (even screaming at each other) may just be their way of getting it out....

Ugh that's the worst. DH was going to go upstairs after we heard our upstairs neighbors fighting. His wife is due any day now and they have a three year old. It sounded like things were brim thrown or slammed on the ground.

He was just goin to say, " hey do you mind turning te TV down, our baby is sleeping" even though we knew it wasn't the TV

Luckily it stopped after 5-10 minutes

@.twist.: & @sorrycharlie: i'm with you guys on this one. maybe if i heard him threatening to hurt her or her yelling for help i'd call, but just crying and arguing i wouldn't. sometimes something like that can get worse when you add other ppl into the mix. i almost always cry when DH & i fight, and he has a temper & always raises his voice and he has a scary voice to begin with. if police showed up in the middle of it, DH would probably think it was my fault & get belligerent & it would end up being a huge mess. also you wouldn't want them to have to go to court over it & have that on their record unless it was something where you were seriously afraid for the safety of one of the parties involved. apparently i'm in the minority in this, but i wouldn't call the police unless there was more than what you're describing.

@.twist.: I was wondering this too.

I may change my mind if I had heard what you did, but just yelling and crying might not be an emergency. When DH and I fight, I end up sobbing because I'm emotional and I sob pretty loud. He ends up yelling because he just is loud - he can't whisper to save his life. If anyone heard us and called the police I'd be mortified! But if you hear signs of violence like someone said earlier, then I'd call.

I called our local police station when I could hear an argument/fight from several houses down. I wasn't sure which house it was exactly, but I figured if I could hear it from that far away they should know. They said they would drive by and listen, and thanked me for calling.

I think it is always important to call if you are concerned about someone's safety. If its nothing, they can explain what happened to the police.

I would report it, they don't need an exact address they can figure it out from there. You could call 911 or a non emergency line.

So sorry to hear this. I think reporting it is wise. You don't need the exact address and you can make the call anonymously.

This is just yelling and crying that you've heard? What kind of screaming?

I guess unless it sounded incredibly serious I wouldn't do anything. A lot of couples argue differently and sometimes yelling and crying are the way people do it. Not saying it's healthy or right but I don't know that just a loud fight is worth calling in an emergency...

Not to mention there isn't much police can or would do unless you witnessed something.

I would for sure call. I would tell the police exactly what you said on here. You aren't sure which house it's coming from but you would like them to investigate. Don't put your life in danger, that is what police are for! They have the ability to investigate and control situations much better than us. I think you would be safe to call with the non-emergency or 911. I think either would be a valid.

I do think it's very important that you do call and let them know what's happening.

Yikes, that really sucks! I think I would call the non-emergency police line and just explain what you saw and about how you're not sure which house it's coming from. I think that's all you really can do.

I wouldn't call 911 unless it sounded like some sort of violence might be going on. For example, my mom heard her neighbors fighting a couple times and the woman shouted out "He's going to kill me!" In those cases, calling 911 would definitely be the way to go.

I think I would call your town's police station, not 911. Just give them your address or block and tell them what you hear. It's their job to come and check it out and they'll be able to figure out where it's coming from even if they have to knock on doors.

you could definitely call 911 if you think that a domestic disturbance is in progress, even if you do not know exactly what house the noise is coming from. the officer that they send out will be able to get a better sense of what is going on, and go up to the houses much more safely than you could (or should!)

just give them the round about address, and explain what you are hearing

And who do you even call in these situations? 911? The non-emergency police line? I have no idea. I haven't lived in the USA long enough as an adult to know what you are supposed to do here... :S

This is the second time I've heard a man shouting and a women screaming and crying. The first time I thought it might have been coming from a TV, but this time I'm sure it's not.

The problem is, there are three houses clustered at the end of the street in the direction it's coming from, but I don't know which house the problem is in.
I'm not about to walk down there (everyone has guns around here, I don't want to give an angry man an excuse), so if I were to call the police what would I tell them? There's a domestic disturbance somewhere down there but I don't know exactly where? I never know what to do in these situations.

What do you think I should do?
