Maybe she says it when she's with other adults? (I know that's probably rare with SAH.)
It would bug me too but I'm sure she will say it and become lol your older child and it will soon be a distant memory!

My friend's son only said dada for the longest time and it drove her crazy. She's pretty sure he was doing it to get a reaction - like the more she encouraged it, the more he refused. He's 4 now and he says mom.

When DS was that age he refused to say things he didn't feel confident in. My mom was practically in tears at one point because we were able to get him to say pop pop for grandpa, but he refused to try to say Grammy. Eventually we got him to say Gigi, so now they're Gigi and Pop Pop instead of Grammy and Grandpa, lol.

But until his language explosion he would refuse to even try most words. He grew out of it though 😊. And there's no way I'm letting him call me Mom any time soon. That came out once and I was like "I'm not Mom! I'm mommy!" Hopefully that works for a long time :silly: .

Our son does have a speech delay, but he only ever says mama when he's upset. And we are a two mom family! He said dada for months before saying mama and there is no dada in our house ;)

My LO learned the names of ALL of his daycare classmates and teachers before he learned to say mama. It did not help me feel prioritized.

He also has learned water, agua, yogurt, coffee, liquor, and tea...but still doesn't say milk or leche.

@delight: I saw a Jane Goodall movie when LO was really young and they talked about order of language acquisition (in Koko the gorilla-maybe) so I too was obsesssed with tracking alll words each month in order!

At 18 months my son called everyone 'mama' and then he switched to calling me and DH 'dada' and not saying 'mama' at all. Now at 20 months he's finally differentiating, but he still gets it wrong a lot. I'm not worried but it is frustrating- I feel your pain!

I am a speech therapist and was a bit obsessed with keeping track of all of my DD's words and writing them down in order that they were used regularly. "Dada" was word number 3 and "mama" was word #130!! There were months between them.

I refused to say Mama/ Mommy or call my mother anything at all until I was like 2.5!!! She thinks it's because I didn't want to admit that we were separate people hahahahaha.

@Tanjowen: @erinbaderin: this is kind of what my husband has been saying - he's like, "well she never NEEDS you, because you're always there!" ..then why does my 4 year old say my name 1000 times a day?!?! :P lol!

I wonder if it's because the two of you are so close and spend so much time together that she doesn't really recognize you as a person separate from her yet?

Yes. It wasn't until AFTER age 2 my son decided to finally start saying Mama. I tried to tell myself it was because I was the constant person in his life so he didn't need to get my attention, but it still hurt. He did switch to saying Mommy a few months ago.

Empathy. My 22 month old has been telling DH "I love you" for months. She's even said it to her grandmothers. Not once has she said it to me! I know she does (and will say so eventually), but it stinks!

That's so frustrating! My almost 10 month old already says dada like it's her job, but doesn't say mama. Obviously she is still really young, and I know dada is easier to say, but still-- I'm with her all day and up with her all night and it's all "Dadadadada!" Jerk. My older LO said mama first by a long while so I'm holding on to that (and pretending she's my favorite since she said mama first :) )

I know this will seem silly. But it's really gutting me, since she's likely our last baby.

My 20 month old will not, has not, said my name. Mama, Ma, Mom, Mommy, nothing. She's said Mama MAYBE 2-3 times, ever.

She's attached to me. Prefers me. I SAH. Totally bonded. But won't say my name. She will say "Daddy" "More Daddy" and use his name regularly when talking to him ("more x daddy, yum daddy!").

I totally feel like chopped liver. When I have her say words, she'll repeat what she can, and literally shake her head no when I ask her to say Mama. :crying:

I feel like she's going to skip right to Mom eventually, and I'll never be Mama again. Sob.

Anyone dealt with something like this?
