I know this is a really old post but wanted to revisit it--because I'm now having this problem.

My little guy turned 1 a week ago and the pediatrician advised us that we should have him weaned off of all bottles by his 15 month appt.

Up until recently he's been taking 3 bottles a day--originally they were half breast milk half formula and in the last month they've been transitioning towards including whole cows milk and most recently towards all WCM He takes the WCM bottles fine--slowly--and frequently doesn't finish them--but fine. He was taking about a total of 10-13 ozs a day. He also drinks water throughout the day and is a big eater so I've never been worried about him finishing bottles.

But after his 1 year appt last week, we switched his "bottles" to sippee cups (either the nuk sippee cup or the 360 cup--I've been unsuccessful getting him to figure out a straw cup so far--but he take water from either the nuk or the 360). And I now cannot get him to drink more than just an initial sip (and then he flings the cup and refuses to touch it). He'll still drink water out of the sippees/360 though.

Then last night my husband made him a all-formula sippee before bed (we did a pantry cabinet clean-out and found a single serving packet of formula that he wanted to use up) and he DOWNED it.

Could he just not like whole cows milk that much? My pediatrician seemed unconcerned--told us that whole cow's milk is a good source of vitamins and calcium but by no means the only source and if he is getting vitamins/calcium through other food--then no worries.

But what do you ladies think? Any suggestions? Should I just not worry about whether he drinks WCM or not? Or should I continue to try to get him to drink WCM from the sippee/360? Or just let him have it in a bottle maybe just once a day?

@winniebee: Do you mean one like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-AVENT-Natural-Drinking-2-Count/dp/B009ZU44AI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1389305051&sr=8-4&keywords=avent+training+cup

We tried the open cup a few times, but he gets mad if we won't let him hold it himself. And well...we all know how that goes with a 15 month old. Poor guy doused himself in milk more than once!

@yoursilverlining: That's so interesting! Maybe we'll just go cold turkey one day.

Our day care even tries too, and every trick they've got, he figures out. I'm going to keep trying and hopefully that new cup helps. I'll check back if we've had any success with anything.

@2PeasinaPod: we are in the same boat! DD just turned one a few weeks ago and I started trying to give her milk in her straw cup that she drinks water from and she refuses. I even got the Nuk sippy but she took one sip from it and refused that too. I hope you have better luck with it than I did! I'm just going to keep trying and hopefully one day she'll take it. Bottle weaning is hard!

Our ped advised that LO wouldn't really drink well from a sippy until we took the bottles away completely - and he was right! Bottles are much easier to drink from than sippy (of any brand/design), so most LO will naturally default to wanting the thing that's easier to drink from.

A couple days after we bottle weaned completely, LO miraculously began to guzzle and drink just fine from her sippy cups!

@MUI831: DS opts for chocolate milk every day at school. I figure the benefits of the milk outweigh what little bit of sugar and chocolate he gets from it. He does drink white milk at home, but I'm not at school to stop him, so I accept it. :)

We are still going through this. I found that the more I offered, he started to drink it. We give him plenty of yogurt and cheese to give him the calcium he needs. And then I did something I swore I would NEVER do. I put a little chocolate in the milk. I got the organic really good but expensive stuff from Whole Foods to make myself feel better. It's a little better but I found that he will only really drink it at night before bed. I think he does drink some at daycare. I'm going to put less and less chocolate in there to get him back to just plain milk.

@MrsRcCar: Thank you! This is similar to what he uses now for his water, so I'm afraid he won't take the milk from there.

@Dandelion: Good to know! Thank you!

@Mrs Green Grass: I'm going to try to limit water. Our other problem is the leaking all over. With water, leaking never really matters, but with milk, it's all over the place!

I would maybe pull back on the water for awhile until he gets the milk down... Hope the new bottle works! We are in the middle of this too. He doesn't understand straws and just wants to chew on sippys. But I do think it helps that he's not really drinking water so he doesn't associate the cup with water.

@2PeasinaPod: DS was EBF and wouldn't take a bottle, so I used these for him to practice with when he was really little (like 4 months) and it was an easy way to wean him when he was about 15 months.

Good luck! They're usually at Walmart for less than $3, too, so I usually grab a couple when I'm there. I'm stocking up for LO. :)

This is the one we finally got N to use! We have one for water and one for his milk. What I found worked to get him to drink it from the cup was to make a big deal about him getting a "milk shake" (I warm up his soy milk in and give it a little shake, he likes the bubbles). It makes it special to him. I can usually get him to take at least 6 ounces that way, but we are still working on it.

If it counts for anything we are in the exact same spot. Two bottles/day (wake up and bedtime) and she drinks like a pro from her straw cup, but will not drink milk in it (cold, warm, anything) like she does with the bottle. Same routine, everything, and no go. We have given up for now and will continue to roll with it, and try again in another month or two!

Oh man, I'm about to do the same with Jay and his bottles. I'm planning on switching the milk to his sippy cups this weekend. I have a feeling it won't get well, since he LOVES his bottles. He loves drinking his water through straw sippys, but not sure if he'll like the milk. I'm glad you posted this because I want to see advice from others who have been through this. I hope you get some help!

I wasn't sure what board to put this on, but we're trying ween our 15 month old from his last 2 bottles. He's on WCM and will only take it from a bottle. If we put it in a sippy, he refuses it all the time. We've pretty much tried everything...we've warmed it, tried a different cup, and we've even tried letting him drink it like a big boy from a cup. No go.

It also doesn't help that he refuses a straw cup too. We continue to try and offer, but he will only take water from a spout sippy and his milk from a bottle. If we don't give him a bottle that day, he'll just drink water. If we eliminate both, he won't drink anything all day. We've tried to make it "fun" for him...but I'm running out of ideas of what is "fun" about drinking milk. I know it's not that he doesn't like it since he'll drink his bottle dry. Anyone else have any suggestions?
