@sarac: I love cloth diapering for that same reason--and because the gDiapers line up so simply in my purse/diaper bag. :)
I also like that if I need disposables, their disposables flush and get sewage treatment not landfill incarceration,

@Navy_Mommy: My best friend is like this. I got her into CDing and now she gets a new one all the time. Of course she can sell them when they've had all their kids. Or hey, if they're pokemon cards and you gotta collect them all that counts as a new hobby!

@Baby Boy Mom: :) Yay!

I don't think I'll ever break even...I'm addicted to buying diapers, lol. I've actually been selling them lately because I have too many, haha.

I never really calculated, but I'm sure we're way past breaking even with Big Brother. I'm excited to be reusing them for Baby Brother though!

@pastemoo: I buy the chlorine free diapers, so it'd be more like $40 for sure. But even at $20 monthly, I'll probably break even by year two, just for this kid.

And you know what? I'd do it even if not for the money. I love cloth diapering. I hate the thought of all those diapers sitting in a landfill.

@scg00387: Yup! I'm lucky I have a simple stash that works for me.

@FutureMrsMcK: Yeah with 250$ in, you'll break even between 3.5 and 7 months (15 to 30 cents/diaper)

That's awesome! I started calculating all that in a Google doc before we start (due this month) but decided it was too much work, haha.

I don't get the diaper collecting thing! I have a few different brands and figure I'll sell off what doesn't work for us, but I can't believe how many some people own & will pay for hard to find prints. I guess I should be glad that bug hasn't bit me :)

I'm way too lazy to do the math, so I don't know if we've broken even yet...we went through two packs of disposables the first two weeks, and he's been in AIO OS since then (he's about 12 weeks old). We spent about $250 on 18 diapers and then MIL gifted us another 6. I'm washing an almost entire load of them pretty much every day....little dude pees a lot and can't stand sitting in a wet diaper.

@sarac: I think the price per month goes down but in the beginning it is more than $40 by a bunch and at the end it may be $20-30?
It also really depends on the brand. But yes... if you keep the cloth for a second kid you definitely break even!

I've spent a lot on mine, but I figure that disposables are what, 40$ a month? I've certainly spent less than 500$ on my cloth, and I'm totally set up for a future child, or reselling them. I think we've long since broken even.

Whenever I get pregnant and use cloth, I would love to figure that number. It must be such a great feeling to know how much you are saving by using cloth.

@pastemoo: ha. love the cartoon. I feel like that! As my IRL friend says: cloth diapers are supposed to save money, except that they are like Pokemon cards, so once you get started, you want to collect them all.

As for my calculations, thanks for the offer, but I am too lazy to go back and figure out how much it all costed. I bought them at such different times, like Boxing Week sales and such. I know the newborns were a splurge, but I only used baby gift money for those, so does that even count? And then for the detergent, we switched to Rockin Green for ALL of our clothes, so hard to remove that price. We are on well-water, so water is free, but I did wonder about the electricity, but now after a few bills, it seems it hasn't really changed much...a bit more because I do the wash and have our lights on and heat/cool the house more during the day (when the electricity costs more). Baby 2 *should* be free, but I already have plans to buy more NB diapers when that happens, since I bought the bare-minimum number and had to wash them daily. Oh cloth!

PS. One night in and I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Wolleybottoms.

@cvbee: message me on fb and I'll calculate it for you. Also tell me how much your disposables would have cost so I can give you all your different break even points.
@LAGS: Kind of... I calculated how many sposies we used divided by the 8 day trip and used that number for when we got back. After about 10 weeks lowered it by 1/day since it seemed like I was washing 2 less each wash on average (wash every 2 days).

My LO is 5 months. And this number is from the Med/OS diapers only--the NB/smalls did not break even because he was out of BOTH by 7 weeks old!

Of course this also means diapers are FREE for the next baby!

Our water bill did not go up (we live in an apartment), so I didn't factor that in. I also didn't factor in the detergent which is probably like $15 so far... so I could be a few days off with my break even point.

Also I won a fitted diaper so I didn't pay for that one.

@Arden: 5 months--so 3.5 months of diapering=break even with the not super cheap sposies.
The super super cheap sposies the PX sells (that leak EVERYTHING) would only break even in May but they only sell those in size 1 and NB.

Woo hoo! We officially hit our break even with disposables point today!
Well... one of them since there is a range of disposable prices-- but we're down to $0.33/diaper and January 1 we will hit $0.20/diaper.

I am so happy!

Did you calculate your break even point? Are you going to celebrate it?

(We use gDiapers and gCloth--occasionally we use the flushies which are like $0.34 to $0.40 a piece, and I have one Thirsties Duo and one Capri for overnights with 2 gCloth. We also have one fitted. It's HUGE.)
