@Boogs: yeah we are definitely leaning towards metal and will have the design in the last picture
@Bluebonnet: very good point, funnily enought DH thought it would be the opposite since the iron bars are so narrow.
thankfully DD wasnt a daredevi and never even cimbed out of her crib. Not sure how DS will be though. He is only 3 months now

How old are your kids?

We have the traditional wooden balusters (like the pic you posted). I wanted to swap out for wrought iron balusters (like the instagram pic from your builder), but was talked out of it by a contractor and the owner of a baby proofing company because they both said the wrought iron balusters were easier for kids to climb up. Our upstairs is open to our foyer and I was so freaked out my kids would try to climb them, we didn't upgrade. (Side note, my kids have never tried to climb them, but if my kids were daredevils, I'd be terrified).

@Mrsbells: Based on your last photo I would probably go with metal. I love the look of both, but I feel like there's less upkeep with metal. With wood, I feel like there would need to be repainting at some point to keep it looking fresh.

This is a picture from the builders instagram account that gives a better idea in terms of the colors for the wall and floors and trim But we would have a much simpler design with the balusters

Thanks everyone
@MamaG: yeah I just pulled those pictures from google to show thr balusters. We would have the dark oak wood throughout. So the floors would match. The style we are looking at has twirled flourishes but i couldnt find any pictures of that

@Mrsbells: Personally, in the examples you posted, I don't like either :( I prefer the metal, but with the lighter wood caps and posts like your first picture, so essentially to match the treads and flooring. I also don't know that I've ever seen plain metal like that without any ornamentation on some of the balusters.

I prefer wood- it goes better with our overall style anyway. But in the right house I think the metal can give it something that sets it apart- like @peachykeen: house really stands out because of it (um, gorgeous house!). I do think if you were thinking of selling in a few years wood has a more universal appeal but it sounds like you are in this house for the long haul.

I definitely prefer wood. We are currently house hunting and when I see metal balusters they go on my mental list of things I would want to change about the house. I think they can work in limited settings like Mediterranean or Spanish style homes.

Ours are metal (black/iron) with a lighter oak wood to cap them off. I don't have a strong preference for wood or metal, I think they both can work well.

Our previous house had wood, which I thought I liked better (also thought it was more timeless). We ripped up the carpet on the stairs and redid the staircase in that house in dark stain wood and white paint (with a carpet runner), which really updated the wood.

When we bought our current house, I realized I actually really prefer the metal balusters in the right setting. It would have looked strange in our more traditional home, but the new home is very open concept with wood floors, black painted railings, etc.

So basically, I think a lot depends on the overall style of your house.

I'll share a pic of the metal in our current house, can't seem to find a pick of the balusters in the previous house.

My house had metal, but it was a really odd design, very open and circular, which is not my style. So we took it down and replaced it with wood on the stair case. The thing is, if it had been more linear, I probably would have kept it.

We are nearly done with our home selections! We chose to upgrade to metal balusters but most people i know have wood. We chose metal because that's in all the model homes but i'm wondering if the wood is more timeless. What do you have and wwyd?
