@honeybear: They're pecking our wood siding. It was focused on mainly one area, but now there are holes in a few different spots on that one side of our house... We have SO MANY TREES for them to choose from! Why are they picking the house?!

@Tanjowen: UGH. so annoying - 4am?! Thats bad... Ours doesn't show up until around 8:30/9ish.

@autumnleaves: i wonder if I can just do this myself? I saw something online... good to know that it worked for you!!

THANKS!

@hellobeeboston: We had one this past Spring! It was going after wood bees that we found in our siding. We had to take two steps: 1) have an exterminator come out and get rid of the bees, and 2) had a roofing company come patch the holes and then put up a metal strip to discourage the bees and woodpecker.

In the meantime, I would get up and go spray the woodpecker with a hose because he was waking me up at 4 a.m. and I was pissed.

Are they on siding or the gutters? I think they sometimes peck on gutters just to make noise/for territorial reasons. If they're on the gutters, you have my sympathy--that's LOUD (but should be harmless to the gutter).

Also, if you've got dying trees you would otherwise cut down entirely, but can leave partially standing, I'd do that. You want to give them someplace else to look for food.

We had to call a critter control company and they put one of those balloons up on our house that is supposed to keep the woodpeckers away. After that, we haven't had any more problems. Generally speaking, I think it's either a bug issue or they are being territorial.

@Mrs. Microscope: hmm... yeah I read online that they like carpenter bees, but we definitely don't have those. We do have a lot of spiders, maybe that's the issue? ugh...

Woodpeckers look for bugs, so this might mean you have a bug problem. Call an exterminator to take care of the bugs and the birds will leave to find a new food source.
