Stupid, dumb, and the like. She's picked them up anyway because we can't control what other people say but when she uses them we just say that those words don't help us understand how she feels and think up better replacement words.

I'm very conscious of body image words too, or saying judgmental things about other people in front of her.

@LuLu Mom: Body imagine words are the huge ones for me too. Daughters (and sons, I'm sure too), pick up so much from their moms on body image, and I work really hard to never talk about myself negatively in front of LO.

That's really the only ones we actively limit. Many of the others I just try not to say anyway.

My LO knows that some words grown-ups can say and she can't. We obviously try not to curse, but it happens.

We are thinking of doing a bad word jar towards her savings. She tells us not to say bad words all the time (that we still continue to say) such as "stupid," "shut up," "dumb/dummy," and "damn."

She says Oh My God, fart, and Jesus Christ and we are fine with that.

Body image words for me are a HUGE no no, I don't want her seeing me standing on the scale saying "I'm so fat" or something similar, she doesn't' need a complex at that. I actually store our scale in the linen closet so she doesn't see it.

Other ones: can't, stupid, dumb, fart, annoying, ect. She's a parrot right now and I said "man you are annoying me right now" to my DH the other day and now she has said "daddy is so annoying" and I was mortified!

I don't use "that's hard" or "that's difficult" because my son then uses it as an excuse not to try, so I use "that's challenging" instead.

Ugh, I'm awful and have a bad mouth sometimes, even in every day conversation. My LO heard me say stupid, annoying, OMG, plus every curse word out there. Since she started reappeating a few I've def made a conscious effort to think before I say something.

My husband says OMG and JC all the time and I think it's really offensive. I've asked him to stop because DS did pick it up.
At 3 he does understand that curse words are not to be repeated. If my dad curses he says "not say that, say 'oh shoot'" lol

We try not to swear. After an awful bout of PUPPPs in pregnancy, we adopted it as alternative as some strange revenge on the condition and it has stuck!

Otherwise words like retarded/spastic/gay as insults.

I don't curse, so I don't think there's anything I say that she can't repeat. I don't care if she says stupid/dumb as long as it's not about a person.

Yeah, I'm with skadi, we don't really do that. If there's something we don't want to say, it's because I don't think anyone should say it, so we try not to. Like, I'm still in the very occasional habit of saying 'retarded' around my husband, because he gets my humor, and he gets that I really grasp the super offensiveness of the word and just use it to be ironic, basically. But my daughter doesn't get that, so she's been the catalyst for me to really clean up the things I don't want in my speech.

My parents cursed around me all the time, and I watched movies that had a lot of cursing. But my parents were very strict that I wasn't to use those words. I understood, from an early age, that just like adults can drink alcohol or drive cars, cursing was off limits for kids.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I can't think of any words that we won't use around our kids. There will be words that they should not repeat and will be punished for doing so. But I know a family where the number of words you can't say around their kids is legion, and it bugs the hell out of me. I'd rather just explain, in very simple terms, what cancer or death or Nazis are, or if I'm really not ready to go there yet, say that we'll explain it when they're a bit older.

Other than curse words of course. DH was telling me a story and mentioned the phrase "oh it's so stupid". DD kept repeating the word stupid over and over again! Eek! I know it's not a bad word but I didn't want a two year old to start saying it. Would you try not say "stupid" in front of your LO or do you think it's no big deal? Any other words you try not to say in front of LO?
