@Corduroy: I manage cell phones for my company so I'll tell you what I tell everyone I work with. Yes, you'll get robocalls and spam texts. Everyone does these days. If it's a smartphone and you're allowed to, go ahead and install a free spam blocker app.

I have a spam blocker and if it says "suspected spam" I never answer. Also, if it's the same number repeatedly you can block them. If spammers leave a message just ignore it. Trust me, I'm sure everyone else is doing the same thing

I don't tend to add a lot of contacts to my work phone, but if that helps you then do it. Look for a Global Address list like ppl above said, then you can load internal contacts. I strive to keep our list current at my org with cell and office numbers.

I agree with the above strategy. Preload as many phone numbers as you can. Does your company have a global address book? Enter as many people as you can that you regularly converse with, then screen the rest.

My work cell also gets a lot of robo calls. I went through emails and added people's phone numbers from their signatures to my contact list so I could identify if it was someone important then built out my contacts list from there. I agree with screening calls from numbers you don't know as long as you are regularly checking messages.

I don’t answer any calls I don’t recognize and i don’t call anyone back who doesn’t leave a voicemail. I also block numbers if I see them a lot. I don’t think a work phone means you need to answer as long as any legit calls are returned in a timely fashion. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t screen calls. I would also make sure your work number is registered on the dnc list

I don’t think it’s terrible! I think in the modern work world if anyone really needs you *right then* they should be able to reach out via email or chat simultaneously, right? Sounds reasonable to me as long as you follow up on any voicemails in a timely manner. Maybe a good time to try to get visual voicemail where it’s transcribed for you?

I got my first work cell phone a month into shelter in place because I thought the lack of phone was the root of my communication problem in my new role (turns out it wasn't). I get 1-2 calls per hour but there's only a call for me about every 3 days. I wrongly assumed company numbers would be pre-loaded as a contact list. But since my colleagues/vendors/customers are at home and calling from their home and cells phones I don't think a pre-loaded phone list would help much anyway.

When I requested the phone I had no idea I'd be getting this many robo calls. Is it terrible if I stop answering the numbers I don't recognize? I feel awkward asking my new boss about it since I went out of a limb and asked for a phone.
