@Lahela017: I was in a very similar situation with my first pregnancy. Got approached with an opportunity that would be appealing if not pregnant but would be difficult to time with my anticipated leave/demands of pregnancy etc due to travel and unpredictability.

I told my immediate boss and the boss who had offered the opportunity. I tried to frame it as being flattered but also being invested in the success of the opportunity and that i would not be the best person at this time because of the pregnancy and x y z. It went well. I actually was offered a different promotion which I did accept later in the pregnancy so it didn’t close any permanent doors.

You can do it—good luck!

@Lahela017: It sounds like you have a good relationship with your boss. I wouldn't want to turn it down without a reason, so I would tell. Sorry you're in this situation! That time can be so amazing but also scary, and we didn't really announce our first two til halfway through, so I get why this is a tough thing to do. Good luck!

@periwinklebee: I think that's part of my reservation too. Just before this pregnancy, I had a chemical pregnancy. I keep waiting for something to go wrong this time around too, but odds are everything will be fine.

Thanks for all the support everyone. I think I knew I needed to talk to my boss, but I needed encouragement.

@Lahela017: I had a hard time telling work, as I'd had a couple of prior losses and kept on expecting the other shoe to drop. However, I have a smaller frame and it was getting hard to hide by around 15 weeks. It actually really helped with my worry for other people - who just assumed it would work out - to know about it... Telling just your boss seems like a great plan.

@Lahela017: congratulations!! I know early pregnancy can be a scary time, but overwhelming odds are your baby is healthy and everything will go well  agree with the pp’s re telling your boss. They won’t hate you for being pregnant and if you’re not going back anyway, you don’t have anything to lose with the career opportunity you were offered.

Thanks ladies! I think you have a good approach of just telling my boss at this time, and not announcing it to the whole office until later.

I think I'm just really nervous to talk to anyone about it still.

Exactly what @Sams Mom said!
I would also explicitly say "I would appreciate it if you would keep this between us until I am ready to share the news after we've received all of our test results -I am not comfortable sharing this with the rest of the office at this time"

Just tell your boss. Even if you got upsetting results back and decided to terminate, you'd need to take significant time off work and you'd have to have an explanation. So regardless, your boss is going to find out.

I would go ahead and just tell your boss only. Tell him that you were planning to wait until all of your tests results got back, but you also don't want to turn down a major project for no apparent reason.

Then after your testing comes back you can announce to everyone else at work if you so desire.

I told work when I was 6 1/2 weeks, but that is because we work with different chemicals that could kill your endocrine system with exposure (we avoid exposure no matter what, but I wanted to avoid that room in general).

This is my first pregnancy, so it’s all new to me. I’m looking for some advice and to hear what others have done:

I’m just over 14 weeks today and everything is looking good. We had an ultrasound last week, and so far baby looks healthy. That being said, we won’t get all of our test results for chromosomal issues back until the end of the month. My plan was to inform my boss about my pregnancy after that- when I’d be about 17-18 weeks along.

Today I just got thrown a curve ball. My supervisor called me into his office to discuss an upcoming project that begins in December. The project would really be a career making project and a great opportunity. However, it would require me to work in a town 3 hours away half of the week, every week for 16 months. I’m not planning on returning to work after baby (not telling work this yet!), but even if I were, this set up would be a no-go with a baby. I don’t think I could handle it either with being pregnant. My supervisor was very surprised when I told him I would need some time to think about it, and couldn’t commit at this time.

So, do I just turn down the project without giving my real reason, or do I announce my pregnancy earlier than I planned and then explain that’s the reason I can’t work on it? I really wanted to wait until I had the test results back, but I think I know now that I’m going to have to announce earlier than that. When have others announced? My supervisor needs an answer on the project in the next week.
