I work in two locations and I have to have the same set up in both places otherwise I get all messed up...dual monitors, phone with wireless headset, etc. I also have to bring papers back and forth, so my filing system is still a work in progress.

I have worked from home for nine years. Here are some tips.

Have set hours. For me, by 8:25 am I need to be on the VPN and ready for emails and calls. Usually I am on before then, but my coffee will have to wait if I am not up and running by set morning time. I will not answer calls past 5:30 pm. Its so easy to want to take calls later because you are already home (no commute), but work is over.

My office is far away from the bedroom, kitchen, and family room. All three can be huge distractions and time wasters. Any time I leave my office I have to take a trip to another part of the house. This reminds me the place I should be is my office. Dont let work seep into other areas.

Shower in the morning even if you end up putting on sweats.

Make your designated home office space beautiful for you. I love my office space. Spending time in there is enjoyable even when its not a work day.

Train your husband and visitors to respect your work. My office door is closed if I cannot be disturbed. Its open if I can talk. This cuts down on excessive interruptions and yelling.

Get a phone with Mute. Sometimes on a conf call I mute the phone because the lawn guys are over and its loud. Mute lets other conduct business without stuff happening at your home interrupting them.

@hilary: @Andrea: i'm thinking i will invest in some nice "lounge wear" that i'd never normally buy cause of $$ like lululemon or something so i feel fancier than my normal pj's haha.

I also got dual monitors and a really comfy office chair! I didn't need much else in terms of stuff. And I liked working in my PJs. :-)

for me getting out and seeing the sun everyday is really important. it's easy to stay at home all day when you work from home, but you really need that change of scenery. it's when i get my best ideas!

I have dual monitors at the office so dual monitors at home help me not get frustrated with my set up. Invest in a good chair as well.

Also I put real clothes on (vs. staying in pj's) and that helps me be productive. Hair and makeup....absolutely not but at least with real clothes I feel less loungy if that makes sense. Maybe I'm just crazy.

That's awesome!

I work from home and I'd say the most important thing is filing away things and keeping organized. I'm so bad at this that things get so clustered then I can't focus and have to spend a bunch of time tidying!

I will be starting a job this month that is work from home! (weeee - that has been my dream for a long time)

for any other bees who currently work from home most of the time, do you have any tips on how to organize my space so that i'm as productive as possible? i already have a separate room to dedicate as office. any items you didn't realize you needed until you were home working? figure out a certain layout worked better for desk/shelves etc?

thanks!!
