@NurseMommy: I would stay where you are for the time being, at least until the new schedule rotation is released and then you could apply for a 0.6 position when one comes available. I would be most concerned that you take it now and something changes in June that really impacts your life. Maybe if your DH goes back to school you could look into having a house cleaner every couple weeks to help lessen your load?

@snowjewelz: I could, but would prefer not to. It looks a little wishy-washy. Which I am. Lol

@Silva: this is what I've been thinking too - I am starting to take better care of myself but it will be very difficult with full time work and a family and home to take care of.

@yellowbird: yes, this is a frightening thought. I'm not sure what I would do in this situation.

@LindsayInNY: we should be finding out today if he's going to school or not. He would start almost immediately.

@Kimberlybee: I wouldn't be giving up seniority per se, just competing with people for rotations that have higher seniority than me.

I appreciate all the comments and insight. I think I will wait and hopefully find out today if DH is going back to school or not. It would mean I need to do more around the house and also a big jump in his income when he's done in 2.5 years.

I voted no because it sounds like you are giving up your seniority and will interfere with your pension. Would this also be taking a step backwards in your career? I would hang on for a bit to see if something better comes up.

My deciding factors would include:
- Is DH going back to school or not? If so, when? That makes a big difference.
- What shift would come up in June?

My biggest concern would be constantly working nights. That means almost no time with DH, which is extremely important to me.

@NurseMommy: because in June the hours could change, the rotation could change, and even the shift length could change I wouldn't apply. Right now you are in the position to see what works for you from May-June and then choose it. As someone else stated if you got this position and then it changed to days could you afford daycare?

for me personally, i would probably apply for and take the .6 position. I think your pros are very valid and i think less stress and a better work/balance life is SO invaluable. plus you mentioned in the future with 2+ kids, you would want to get a .6 position as well. as far as the socializing aspect and not being in daycare, you could always join moms play groups or go to classes/library story times/etc for some socialization.

I recall that you've been having a tough time lately. I think less work hours might help you achieve a better balance for yourself, and prioritize your own self care needs. I would apply, and see what happens. That gives you more time to think about it, and doesn't close any doors right away.

Can you decline if you got it? Or does that look bad? I feel like a) you need to apply in order to even find out if you can get it and b) that will delay your decision making by a while so you can think about it some more

If I'm reading all this right, you'd be working the same amount of days (usually) but you'd be working 8 hrs rather than 12, and the net money difference would be around $200-300/month.

I don't think there is a WRONG choice here, but I think that I'd probably keep your current job. It seems like it would be better to have seniority and also have the flexibility of having daycare, and also I do think daycare is a net benefit in itself sometimes.

I dunno, i'd want to be at the top of the pack and pick the schedule I want. I wouldn't want to always work evenings, either.

I also think that both my Dh and I would be worn really thin working and not having daycare. Nothing would ever get done non-baby related. Especially with grad school.

@looch: ok, I get what you're asking. Yes, right now the position is for evenings only. However, when they do the shift overhaul, the only thing guaranteed is that it will be a 0.6 FTE. The hours could change, the rotation could change, and even the shift length could change.

@T.H.O.U.: we definitely couldn't swing the cost with me making less. We are trying to save a downpayment for a second home as we plan to rent out our current home for it to eventually help with our retirement - we already rent the basement suite. I will still get pension, but I won't be able to retire as early or with as much. It will increase again if I go back to full time. My other benefits are not affected.

@looch: there are a bunch of different shift rotations, and when they roll out a new schedule (very very rare, they've been working on doing this since before I started three years ago), those with the greatest seniority get to choose their rotation first, within their FTE. Not sure if that helps?

@beaker: I'm just worried that another 0.6 position with evenings won't come up, as they're highly coveted! Also curious as to why I'll be in a position of greater strength in June?

Im always a big advocate of applying and see if its even something that would be offered to you.

Yes if you could swing the small amount of money lost it might not be a be a bad thing. But I do think by age 2, definitely by 3, kids need to be in some sort of daycare/preschool (unless you are doing a ton of classes/playgroups/etc). Could you swing the cost if you made less? I wouldn't worry about not having a back up daycare because you have your MIL and you might be able to find a drop in daycare center.

Would you get pension and stuff back if you went back full time later on?

Ok, this is going to be kind of long, but I'm not sure if I should apply for this position or not.

I'm an ER RN, I currently work a 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent -well, when I go back to work in May). I have always always always worked full-time. I work 12 hour shifts, 8-8, days/nights. On average, I work 3.3 days/week. I love my job, but it is high stress. We will be paying $975 for daycare 3x/week. My husband works a "normal" 9-5 job with flexible hours, but may be starting his online masters program in addition to working full time. We have a high needs dog. ;)

A position has become available for an evenings (4-midnight) only position, 0.6 FTE, which means I would work 3 eight hour shifts/week. I'm so tempted to apply, because
1) working less! Yay! More time with my daughter - with 12 hour shifts there will be days when I don't see her at all.
2) it means I could walk the dog and start dinner before shifts when I work, which would ease the load greatly on my husband those days
3) I'd be bringing home approximately 1200 a month less, which is nearly offset by the daycare costs
4) we wouldn't need daycare at all because my DH could work 7-3 when I work and be home in time for me to go to work
5) my mil is planning on retiring in June and has offered "backup" daycare if needed
6) easier on my dh if he is in school

However, this is what is stopping me
1) we wouldn't have daycare if we needed it
2) I wouldn't be in a position to pick up overtime shifts because of the lack of care and also ot isn't offered to pt people very often
3) I wonder if my dd would benefit from being In daycare as my DH and I are both strong introverts and I don't know if I can provide enough social stimulation for her
4) my pension would be affected
5) might actually lead to less me-time as I can't drop her off at daycare for appointments, etc.
6) it's less money.
7) my work is changing their shift schedules, and I don't know what that will look like. This could be as early as June. We choose our rotations based on seniority. If I continue to work full time, I will have a top pick as there are few of us working ft and most of them have less seniority than I do. If I work a 0.6 I will get bottom pick.

I struggled with work-life balance already before i had my dd, and I've been very very worried about it upon returning to work. We absolutely 100% need my income, as I make more than my DH. These 0.6 evening positions don't come up very often and are fairly coveted. There's about a 70% chance that I would get it based on my seniority, and I would hate to be offered the job then refuse it. I will likely end up working a 0.6 eventually after we have a second child because of the daycare costs. I can go back to full time if the 0.6 isn't working for us, but we will lose our spot at daycare.

Sorry for the novel - I'm really, really torn!
