We don't have bereavement leave, but our sick leave is separate from vacation time. I think in the case where there's just vacation time, there should be some sort of bereavement allowance.
@jessiejo17: I understand not wanting to step on your boss's toes. I think it would be a good idea to at least talk with your friend about it...off the record :)

@ninja: Yes there is, I just don't know if its worth stepping on my boss's toes about. He has been very good about my doctor's appointments & sick leave when I was out with morning sickness in the beginning. But I might mention something in passing with a girl in HR I'm friends with.

Actually, I don't get any bereavement time for anyone but immediate family members- grandparents don't count in that. I thought that was pretty standard- or maybe my company just sucks. I've always thought it was a stupid policy considering the fact that I'm pretty sure if I lost someone in my immediate family I wouldn't really be worried about whether I was getting paid or not.

@jessiejo17: Is there an HR person in your building you could talk to? I work for a big company too, and I've found that manager's don't often have a great grasp of the leave policies.

I'm sorry-- that sucks and seems really unfair. At my first job after college, they didn't even count my own grandfather as immediate family-- they told me that was more for parents or siblings! I think they ended up 'doing me a favor' and letting it slide as bereavement time, but I just thought it was pretty ridiculous.

@MamaMoose: I agree it is absurb. I think that it should be in writing, we are not given personal/sick days only vacation time, so it's not like I have a lot ot use. My vacation renews at the end of the month, but I can't use it (well I can if absolutely necessary) but I need to use it as my "paid" maternity leave so I"m trying to save as many days as I can. I think wish this policy would change.

ugh, that's terrible :( so sorry about DH's grandma
I know that company's have these policies to keep folks from abusing them but still... I have a great aunt that I'm very, very close to, she's my grandmother's sister and since my grandmother passed away when I was a teenager she's been like a grandmother to me. I know my work wouldn't understand our relationship either if I were in the same situation as you.
I agree that it should be in writing. And I don't think anyone should say, it's JUST his grandma, not yours.. so insensitive.

That's absurd! At my company your spouse's immediate family is considered to be part of your immediate family and therefore funerals (and days to travel to and from if necessary) are covered under bereavement leave! And that is written in our handbook!

Our leave policies are actually really good so I can't complain.

So this is a little bit of a vent since there is nothing I can do to change it but I need to get it off my chest. My DH grandma passed away this weekend and the funeral is Wednesday. I let my boss know and asked what our policy is on this.as I couldn't' find anything in the handbook (strang for a larger company.) Well I guess it is up to the manager, and mine decided that because I have been leaving early for my doctor's appointment that I need to take a vacation day. (Please note I do make up every minute I'm gone for these.)

I only have one left before the baby comes. I was told I have to use it or I need to skip the funearl since "it's just my husband's grandma not my own." I thought this was horrible on their part and think it should be in writing somewhere.

Anyone else have policy's they do not agree with?
