@Purpledaisy: I'm sorry. I agree with @MsLipGloss, it's much easier to find a job when you have a job unless you don't mind being unemployed for awhile. I'm not sure what you do,
But my brother is in the med field and he has never gotten
Off Xmas or thanksgiving and he's been working for over 15 years. In some fields, working the holidays is required. It stinks for those that have to work but sadly reality is a bitch. Have you thought about doing Xmas early? That's what we always did. Your LO is so young, they won't know. Hugs, I'm sorry.

Also, you may not know everything your boss is dealing with regard to time off requests and other employees. It may have nothing to do with you, and you may have just gotten caught in the crossfire, so to speak.

Your situation really sucks, and I'm sorry you are going through this. BUT, do not quit unless and until you have something else lined up. It is so much easier to get a job when you have a job! And there is likely to be an influx of candidates after Jan 1, too. If you can, I would ride it out until you can make other plans. It's never good to make important decisions from an emotional place.

Wow! I would get out of there and enjoy my holiday. You still have time to give them two weeks notice so they shouldn't technically be able to give you a bad reference. Someone in HR may know better than me, but I thought they could only say if you were "rehireable" or not.

@Purpledaisy: Do you have a HR dept you could turn to? It might be worth it to talk to someone to see if there is anything they can do or if they could offer some advice.

I agree with what @brownie: said - start looking now so you can have something lined up. You can use the hours they cut to job search.

What would happen if you lose that shift permanently? Start looking for a job now and leave when you have one lined up. Work less but don't quit.

@dojo: I am afraid of losing them as a reference in the future. And I am afraid of being unemployed with nothing else lined up and possibly having trouble finding another job...

I just feel like I'm being bullied. She's mad at me for requesting a holiday off so she cut one of my shift AND didn't give me the holiday off. She also made a memo saying that if anyone doesn't show up or tries to call in for any holidays shifts they will be written up AND lose that shift permanently. I've been in a situation before where I stayed at a job wayyyy to long with a boss that was really just a grown up bully and treated me very unfairly and I don't want to repeat that. I almost feel to like by quitting I will be giving myself a big extra push to job hunt!

That would make me so mad! I think my advice would be to just consider how quitting would impact your career (If that's something that's important to you). I've quit jobs when I was fed up with things and though it made me feel better initially it didn't really help my career and I think it was part of why I was stuck in a rut job-wise for a little while. Recently I was really upset about some work situations and was really close to taking a job with less pay and not anything really much better but decided long-term it wouldn't benefit me so I waited it out another month and ended up getting a much better job and I am SO happy I didn't give up.

On the other hand your situation sounds pretty messed up and that is so terrible that you are unable to get the holiday you requested off!!! If you know that you would be able to get something better in January I would say go for it but just make sure you think it though!

@wheres_c: lol I agree! It would make it that much sweeter knowing that they were going to be scrambling around! Even once they hire someone it takes about a month for background checks, drug testing and enough training to be on their own hehe

I don't even know what I'm looking for here. Advice, similar stories, people to complain with... Just venting :)

So I got to work today and found out that I'm getting one day a week cut off of my schedule! I work part time so I'm going from 4 days to 3 days. And I know that she just cut it because I requested a holiday off( I work somewhere that's 24/7) and it's also the ONLY holiday I've requested off in the 2.5 years of working here(I'm talking thanksgiving, Xmas everything!) I'm just so fed up right now. I really just want to quit and enjoy the holidays with my family and look for a new job in January. We *could* afford it. It wouldn't be the best thing for us but it wouldn't break us or anything...
