@Hypatia: Ahhh, thanks for all those details re: the binding. So helpful. My daughter is able to write but stamps are still really fun!

@SupernovaJ: I think it was $6. It's worth it to me to be able to be able to keep,it open to the last page we were on. The only downside is that the pages may tear our of the spiral binding if you're rough with them, though we haven't had muhc of a problem. You can also pay for a hard plastic cover for an additional fee if you want.

A word of caution. Be sure to emphasize to the employee that the binding needs to be cut off so that it doesn't cut off the content of the book. I've heard stories of inexperienced / careless employees cutting too much of the margin off of workbooks so that the pages were ruined. I don't think it happens often, but it's worth pointing out to try to prevent that from happening.

If your preschooler can't write yet, what we did was buy a set of self inking number stamps from Amazon (0-9). My DD loved choosing the correct one and stamping it in.

I got one that was a Highlights one. DS likes to work on his letters and color things. He also lives mazes, so your kid might like a book of mazes.

@Hypatia: Thanks so much for this recommendation. I just ordered a couple of books for the pre-K level after going to the site and looking through some of the sample pages. Thanks for the awesome suggestion.

Do you recall how much it was at Kinkos/ Staples to get it into a spiral bound?

I like Greg Tang for supplemental work. Our school uses Everyday Math for their regular program but had begun supplementing with his worksheets.

@Hypatia & @Desertdreams88: This looks perfect! Thanks so much.

@Dolphin: yep, we have the highlights big kindergarten workbook, too. I thought she would love it because she loves the games in highlights, but she is way more focused on the more math-y pages and now she's finished all of those. She gives me the side eye when I suggest the games that she seems to love in the mag.

@pinkelephant: duh, I should ask her teacher! Thanks for that suggestion. I just emailed her.

Future homeschooler here. What you’re looking for is Mathematical Reasoning.

https://www.criticalthinking.com/mathematical-reasoning-level-a.html

It’s 250 pages of colorful worksheet type math. It teaches not only your standard K curriculum, but as the name suggests, reasoning and problem solving skills.

The only bad thing I can say about it is that I wish it was spiral bound. But you can take it to Kinkos or Staples to have them cut the binding off and replace it with spiral for a low fee.

The type of math books you find at Walmart are not written to a high standard and are not really meant to educate in any but the most casual sense. I think you really need to look at workbooks like the one I linked that were written by professional educators as a complete curriculum. But of course, I’m biased. ;)

My daughter loves homework too. She gets so excited when I tell her it’s homework time. :silly: She’s in K now but when she was in preschool we got her “Big Kindergarten” workbook and “Big First Grade” workbook and she loved those. You can order it from Amazon or Target.

Dollar Tree has some decent workbooks for early reading/writing, as well as math. We had a cute Disney Princess addition/subtraction book this summer - I'd say it might be a little more appropriate for a second semester kindergartner or first grader than a new kindergartner, but some pages are a lot easier than others, and you could always modify them with counters of some sort.

Also, have you asked her teacher? When I asked my DD's teacher for things we could work on at home, she sent DD home with literally a hundred copied pages from workbooks similar to those they use in school. Similarly, you can find TONS of free printables online by googling the grade level and topic - or specific workbook company if you want to use the same things they do in school.

I do NOT like the Brain Quest workbooks - my daughter thinks they're fun, but I think the activities are super easy, and don't necessarily target things I'd want her to spend her time on...but if you're doing workbooks just for fun, your DD might like them!

My kindergartner LOVED homework in preschool (I was opposed to it and complained to the school but once she saw it she was obsessed and I couldn't stop her). There is no homework in her kindergarten, but she has started asking for me to make up homework for her. She has the Highlights kindergarten workbook, but is almost done with it. She's particularly asking for more math problems. Are there any workbooks you've used that you would recommend?
