Being a waitress made me realize tips are not mandatory. Some people were a pleasure to serve regardless of the amount they tipped (old people were always really nice and hardly ever tipped over 2/3 dollars). Others, couldn't have tipped me enough to put up with their crap. In California, waitresses earn minimum wage regardless, I hate that servers feel entitled to a tip. I have a "friend" who always complains about crappy tips and sometimes I want to tell her that customers might not give crappy tips if she wasn't such a crappy server. I sort of wish receipts came with comment cards: "I tipped you a dollar because my drink was never refilled, you never brought the napkins I asked for, and you gave me attitude when I wasn't ready for you to take my order."

I know this doesn't answer the original thread but aahhhhh. Haha :)

I worked in a coffee shop with really high am traffic and those tips were my gas and food money and it was all spare change. I always tip my coffee people! I also got really good at rolling change.

My sophomore year I worked the register at a mom & pop cheesesteak place. We had a communal tip jar and I don't think we ever received a bunch of tips. One night an older gentleman tipped me personally. He made it very clear the $5 he put in my hand was just for me. The owner' daughter who managed the shift that night was so upset I didn't put the tip in the jar. And that is my only memorable tip story.

I was a server for 8 years and only stopped once I had DD 6 months ago. Serving really made me become aware of everything around me when I go out to eat. If it's crazy busy I have so much patience when it comes to service because I understand how much it sucks being in the weeds. If I hear a table around me complaining or being rude to my server I make sure to tip more and be extra friendly. It may be a little overboard but I remember how much it really was horrible when I had to wait on rude tables. I actually really enjoyed being a server though - even after I got a good full time job I kept waiting tables on the weekends because it's a lot of fun!

I was a waitress for a year during college. Worst. job. ever. I quickly learned I wasn't cut out for the uncertainty of the hours I would work and wages I would earn, and it was good motivation to keep moving fast through my college classes. Knowing how hard it is to live off of tips alone, I usually never tip below 20%, even if all they did was bring water to the table or provided subpar service.

Was reading about the jobs that everyone had in college, and a lot of us have worked for tips at some point! The big surprise to me about working for tips was: 1) how important tips were both financially and emotionally and 2) how I remembered every single customer and how well they tipped!

It feels like just yesterday that my tips would make or break my month. To this day, I try to return the favor - and also, just be nice to people in service professions. I go to the same cafes, and I try and learn the staff's names so I can say hello. Pretty sure that a good tip means more than most acts of kindness though!

Do you (or did you ever) work for tips? Share your stories here if you remember them!
