Oof. I never actually vomited, but I went through this. My coworker is obsessed with cabbage soup and it was putting me over the edge a lot. I eventually just lit a candle, ate a lot of ginger chews and constantly snacked on crackers. I also had the luxury of shutting my office doors on days it smelled really bad. Ugh. I don't miss those days, I hope pregnancy #2 is kinder to me someday.

I never had morning sickness, but I had a heightened sense of smell. There were times when I would smell something I didn't like, and I would cover my nose/ mouth with my hand. Thankfully, there weren't too many of those situations and I could easily leave the area.

How close is the bathroom, if you have a throw up? I work on one end of the building and the bathroom was in the middle of the building. When my HG was bad, I admit I had to hold throw up (in mouth... Gross, I know) until I got to the bathroom. One day, my nausea was really bad and I actually moved my laptop to an empty office closer to the bathroom. It helped a lot.

Also for me, my HG was bad on its own so I had to keep eating pretzels, wheat thins, graham crackers or whatever was appetizing at the time.
Oh, my cubical was right next to a break room so I smelled stuff all the time. For me, it made me snack or get up to find food all the time. There were times someone would bring something in that would smell bad to me and that's when I would get up and walk around a bit to get some fresh air. If I felt like I was going to get sick, I would actually hang out in the bathroom floor. (Our building is fairly new and I knew the woman who would clean our bathrooms so it felt clean to me.) Luckily, there was a bathroom that was on the opposite end of the building that was used less frequently so I preferred to use that one.

well hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones that don't have severe MS. I didn't, but for the times i did feel naseous, i always had snacks on hand and it helped to ward it off.

Could you also get something that smells nice and place it on your desk in hopes of masking out the smells you don't like?

Funny, most of the suggestions involve something mint tasting or smelling and mint was an aversion with both of my pregnancies.

Like others said, smells were awful. I was nauseous and sick all the time, but smells didn't make me sick.

@Cherrybee: Ah! I hope that doesn't happen. Although, if the smell made me hungry, then I would take that any day over nauseous!

@lovehoneybee: That's a good tip. I will keep that in mind.

@My Only Sunshine: It truly is revolting. Normally, I have a strong stomach but the smell gets me everytime. Luckily it doesn't linger. 5 minutes after he closes his container, I know I can breath again.

@MOMTOLITTLEB: I'm hoping I'll be one of the lucky ones, but yes, it will be worth it even if I feel like hell 24/7. Maybe I'll take after my mom. I don't think she threw up once with all three kids.

No smell/food aversion with #1, but #2 is more sensitive. I try to walk away for a bit or take really deep breaths until my senses get used to the scent.

I have a friend that does what @mrs.shinerbock: does. She finds a lotion scent she's okay with and just applies it or sniffs it when she smells something no bueno.

My first pregnancy, I went through several containers of peppermint hand sanitizer - anytime I was grossed out by a smell I would put it on and since it was flu season, no one thought anything of it. Bath and Body Works carries it in the winter.

I was really, really lucky because I didn't get any sickness with #1, but I did have a terrible aversion to orangey scents, including the smell of our hand soap! Yuk! The problem I used to have is that the smell of co-workers food used to male me really REALLY hungry!! What if you suddenly started craving burnt-toast-and-ketchup?!!

I ate at my desk (where as most people eat in the cafeteria). I was nauseous with or without smelling other people's food anyway! Plus I wanted to stay at my desk so I can just kinda be slumped over, and eat weird bland stuff and not be looked at and pointed out as being pregnant right away lol.

The smells bothered me more, especially during trips to the cafeteria but it never actually made me sick. You'll probably at least feel generally yucky during the early days no matter what but I know for me, I was so happy it was worth it. Some women truly suffer from terrible sickness though, I hope you don't have to worry about that.

I had some issues...I have a decent amount of people who cook fish and strongly flavored ethnic food. Some days I could handle it and other days I went for walks.

I also kept a bunch of hard candies at my desk AND a candle I could smell when things got overwhelming!

I have this problem (still). I have a friend that gave me a vial of peppermint oil (and also one that has a very lemony smell) and I would just sniff those (or rub it under my nose). I used to do the same thing when we did dissections in bio lab, but with peppermint chapstick. Rub some under my nose and I couldn't smell anything else.

It was bad for me! Luckily the smells weren't too crazy but I would sit slumped over at my desk typing with one hand and sucking on ginger candies. I swear I could smell yogurt from a mile away (I hate the smell!) If you do have morning sickness those nasty breakfasts will definitely get to you!

@Shizaz: That description of your coworker's breakfast sounds truly revolting. My sense of smell was out of control when I was pregnant. Someone ate tuna salad in the lunch room while I was pregnant, and I could smell it WAY down the hall. The good news is smells grossed me out, but didn't actually seem to make me get sick more than usual.

If you're like me, some things that helped were chewing really minty gum or sucking on breath mints when there were offending smells, and bringing in some nice smelling lotion I could put on my hands to overpower the food smells.

Hi ladies. I'm not pregnant, but we will be TTC next month. As I sit here smelling my co-workers breakfast, I started to wonder... for those of you who worked in an office environment, how did you find the nausea?

The guy who sits in the next cubicle brings the most awful smelling breakfast every single day. I don't know what it is he is eating, but it smells like he burnt some toast, drowned it in ketchup, and stuck it in the microwave.

I have to breath only through my mouth when he eats, or it makes me gag - and I'm not even pregnant! So I'm a little worried that he's going to sent me running to the washroom every morning once I am pregnant.

Did anyone find it difficult being able to smell everyone's food? Maybe it won't be as bad as I think it will be?
