It can be done and you will figure it out. The worst part for me about returning to work for figuring out our new schedule and routine.

I wake up at 5:30 and spend about a half hour getting ready
About 6 my husband gets up and takes 5 min to get ready then he packs the pump bag daycare bag and her bottles/food.
Around 6 I get her up and get her changed
We all leave at 6:30
I nurse her at daycare and leave at 7 (it's like 8-10 min from the house)
I get to work at 7:30am and leave at 4:30 pm
I pick her up about 5 and get home about 5:15
I nurse and unpack
My husband gets home at 6
We eat dinner
Bath at 7
Nurse around 7:30
Bed by 8

If she's up before 5 I put her back down. Otherwise she will sit in her bouncer while I shower or my husband gets up a little. It earlier to help watch her.

@Coco Bee: Unfortunately our families are both 5+ hours away and we don't know anyone close by (our neighborhood is a lot of older people with adult kids). Most of our friends are still in the city and don't have kids- which is why we are sort of navigating this stuff on our own. We're really hoping to meet some parents through day care- it definitely makes it harder to not have other people with kids to socialize with.

@dookie32: Hey, if that works better for you, go for it. I can't get ready with LO awake either, but our current daycare is close enough to home that if I need to I can drop him off and then come home to shower :)
He'll be fine if you let him go back to sleep and then just wake him up again at 6:30 or whenever you need to. Sometimes what I'll do if LO is sleeping late (like if he wakes up at night and then goes back to sleep), I'll go in his room and open the curtains and leave the door open in the hopes that the light and noise will help to gently prod him to wake up on his own.

@Lozza: I'm sort of leaning towards putting him back down and waking him up only because I think it would be really hard to entertain him for all that time. He's a bit high maintenance and isn't really good with just sitting in the swing or on the floor for longer than 5-10 min without wanting to be picked up. It would make it really hard for my husband and I to get ourselves ready and get out the door on time!

@dookie32: what about family? Do you have any sisters/parents that could split up the days? Or what about some mommy friends - and then you can work out a fair schedule - they watch your LO for those couple hours, and a couple times a month you watch their LO(s) so they can go on a date or something.

A lot of families do "nanny shares" as well. You could look into that?

I guess it depends on what time he wakes up. If he wakes at 5, then maybe he can go back to sleep for a bit but if it is already 6 and you leave at 7 then you should probably just keep him up and then maybe he will fall back to sleep during the car ride.

We have to have DD up by 6:45 at the latest for daycare but luckily I have been able to get home early so that she can have an early bedtime in the evening so we haven't had to deal with loss of sleep too much.

You will figure it out!

@Coco Bee: Yeah, financially that's not really an option. Our day care is really expensive and we're pretty maxed out as far as the budget goes. I'm hoping to find a job in the suburbs at some point once things settle down a bit but this is what we have to deal with for at least the next 3-6 months.

I also went back to work when LO was 9 weeks, and DH and I also have crazy commutes :)
If it were me, I'd probably let him wake up for the day any time after 5, and figure that he'd be up for max two hours and then nap in the car on the way to daycare. I probably wouldn't worry about not getting enough sleep at night, but then LO was not exactly a champ sleeper at night! You can also try it out both ways and then decide which works better for you... whether you prefer getting up with him at 5 or 6 and hanging out, or whether you'd prefer to get yourself ready first and then get him up with just enough time to get him ready for daycare.

oh that's rough! Is it possible you could hire either a morning or evening nanny? They're very common for school age children. If you could have her pick your son up from daycare (or drop him off, whichever will be easier to you), then he can either sleep later or go to bed earlier, and you'd probably only need about 2 hours of care so it wouldn't be too expensive.

I'm going back to work next week and I'm concerned about the sleep schedule for our son who is 9 weeks old. For my job, I commute from the suburbs so my husband and I leave our house at 7am and don't get home usually until around 7pm. Our day care is at my husband's work so he'll be dropping me off at the train and then dropping our son off then doing the reverse on the way home.

Right now, my son is a pretty good sleeper- he goes to bed between 8-9pm and usually sleeps straight through until about 5-6am. If we put him back down again immediately after he eats, he'll fuss for a bit but eventually sleep another few hours. If we have him up for the day at that point, he'll take a few long naps during the day (3+ hours). This is not a schedule we'll be able to maintain though when we need to start leaving at 7am. I'm not sure if I should plan on putting him back down and waking him up right before we leave? I'm also concerned about him not getting a big enough chunk of sleep at night. Because we get home so late, it's impossible for us to get him to bed any earlier than 8pm. I'm just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and what schedule worked for you and your LO.
