One thing that you can do is to make a sand/salt/sugar tray and have your kid make shapes/lines/whatever with their pointer finger. Holding a pencil is a skill that shouldn't be forced because until the muscles are strong enough, they'll hold the writing utensil in a way that will need to be corrected later.

@sorrycharlie: at just turned three my son was still indescriminately scribbling and drawing forceful dots. Now he draws rocket ships that look like penises, smushed circles, and "activity" (I can't describe what it is!). (5 months later)

We get ovals with squiggly line faces. And tons of "letter" scribbles. She can write her first initial, an M for mama, and D for daddy. She could color alllllll day.

Ugh ate my post.

LO is 3 and does lines and circles only. He has an idea about straight lines versus circles for letters. The first picture is his name :) basically a line for each letter. The second is him tracing our names (drawing circles around and on top of the letters).

No worries yet. If she seems to be struggling to hold the utensil properly, try lots of firm clay and monkey bars. Hand strength is really important for fine motor control!

Handwriting is not something to worry about at age 3. My son was not interested in coloring or drawing at 3, and I don't think he was unusual in that regard. His writing and drawing at 5 is fine. Unless there are other indications that she has trouble with fine motor skills, I don't think not being able/wanting to draw is a problem. Give her other fine motor activities and see if she enjoys those. My son liked playing with mini pompoms and little toys at that age.

I'm not a workbook fan, personally, so I would halt that until later, but if she seems to want to draw, there is nothing wrong with showing her how to do basic shapes.

DD is 3.5 and she only started drawing in September when she started Montessori (she was in daycare previously). Her fine motor skills are weak but has improved greatly once she learned to hold a pencil properly. I never taught her bc I was afraid I would teach her incorrectly! But she was able to do faces maybe at 3y3m.

We have a sylvan language arts success book and she only became more interested after school started. They do workbooks every day.

She also is not great at colouring. She rushes to colour and leaves lots of white space. But I'm sure she will get better as her skills improve!

Here are some pictures/colouring she did in September.

My LO can draw a few different things and can write maybe 5-6 letters. But she will sit and draw/color for hours a day, she's interested in it so I think that helps.

My daughter is 3.5 and has only *just* started semi coloring in the lines. She still can't really draw figures. She only just started tracing letters because they started at school.

I'm not worried!

LO turns 3 next week and can draw a "face", a rough circle with 3 squiggles inside for eyes and mouth. Sometimes he'll draw a car, 2 circles with a bunch of squiggles on top. He has no interest in tracing letters either, he can't follow the dotted lines at all.

wasn't sure where to put this! my daughter is just 3, and really has noooo sense of control of drawing. I was reading on an early intervention thing (long story) that they should be able to do tadpole figures - she can color "in" lines (roughly...) but definitely does not draw anything resembling anything with the exception of lines and a rough..circular..shape.

where are most kids with handwriting at this age? any way to encourage this or does it just come with age? we do a workbook and work on tracing but she does not seem to care lol.
